Musings on Bellator:
Pitbull Freire beat Joe Warren up. He slugged him around for almost the entire first round, then knocked him down hard, nearly finished him with ground and pound, and locked on a rear naked choke as the bell rang. If there was ever a 10-8 round in MMA, it was this one. Yet all three judges scored the round 10-9. It was disgraceful. I agree with Jamie, though, that Freire ultimately put himself in the position to be screwed by doing so little in the last half of the fight. Pitbull could be a great fighter and a challenger for Jose Aldo in a few years, but he needs to work on his cardio. For the record,I gave the last two rounds to Warren, and thus had the fight scored a draw, 28-28.
I was happy to see Alexander Shlemenko win the middleweight tournament. Nothing against Bryan Baker, but Shlemenko's unorthodox striking is great fun to watch. If he loses to Hector Lombard, Shlemenko should consider dropping to 170 pounds. He is small for a 185 pounder.
Why wasn't Jose Vega already signed to the Bantamweight tournament? He knocked out Jarrod Card in impressive fashion at Bellator's last show, and Card was slated to be included in the tourney. Also, why did Nick "Garfield" Mamalis have to beat someone already in the tournament (Albert Rios) to get in? Shouldn't his choking out of Mark Oshiro been enough? Bellator had announced that an Oshiro win over Mamalis would put Oshiro in the tourney. Why was the reverse not the case?
