The World Series of Fighting is getting in on the one-night-only tournament nostalgia, announcing on Monday that Nov. 20 will see eight lightweights compete to earn a shot at the organization's Lightweight Championship.
Though more details are to come, the one-night only tournament will play out live on NBCSN, and whomever emerges victorious will fight the winner of the Justin Gaethje vs. Luis Palomino rematch.
It will be the third higher profile one-night only tournament to happen in the U.S. in a 13 month time-span, following the Battlegrounds MMA pay-per-view event last October, and the upcoming four-man light heavyweight tournament from Bellator on Sept. 19 on their "Dynamite" card.
Penick's Analysis: I'm not the biggest fan of one-night tournaments in modern MMA. Some fights can be absolutely grueling, and following up with more on the same night can be extremely dangerous. Also, it entirely depends on where they bring this event, because there are differing rules in what's allowed from different commissions. Bellator's four-man tournament is going to feature two-round fights for the opening round, as the commission is only allowing five total rounds per fighter. The Battlegrounds show was allowed full fights for three rounds each, but again, different commissions have different rules and regulations concerning a one-night field. It doesn't lead to the best action in each round, either, so it could wind up being a complete trainwreck with a dull end. Still, it's something different, and sometimes that plays well with fans.
