By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief Tim Sylvia's debacle of a boxing-turned-MMA bout with former WBO heavyweight champion Ray Mercer in Alabama last night took the wrong turn for him, as he was knocked out by Mercer in ten seconds.
After the bout was originally scheduled to be a boxing match inside of the cage, they were forced to change it to MMA rules due to legal issues. In the opening seconds of the bout, Sylvia threw a kick at Mercer, who looked irritated at that decision on Sylvia's part. Mercer then unloaded a right hand that sent the 6 foot 8 Sylvia down to the ground like, in Sherdog's description, "a California Red Wood."
A fan video of the fight was posted on YouTube and is below (Note to App users, video not available on App, check MMATorch.com):
Penick's Analysis: Could there have been a worse outcome to this ill-advised bout for Tim Sylvia? In his last two fights he was finished in less than a minute combined. One of those was to the best heavyweight in the world, the other to a 48-year old washed up former champion, who, by the way, was defeated by TUF 10's Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson. It's an embarrassment for big Tim and there's not a chance he's going to be seen by anyone as a top ten heavyweight in a long time, if ever. This was just a disaster for him.
