By Matt Pelkey, MMATorch Columnist Welcome to a new feature on MMATorch.com. Each week I'll profile a new fight camp, giving you the who, what, where, when and how of each camp. We start with perhaps the top gym in the country right now in Jackson Submission Fighting. If there's a particular camp you'd like to see profiled, feel free to email me at matt6buckeye@hotmail.com.
WHO: Jackson Submission Fighting
LOCATION: Albuquerque, New Mexico
FOUNDED: 1992
HEAD TRAINER: Greg Jackson
OTHER COACHES: Mike Winkeljohn
TOP FIGHTER: Georges St. Pierre. With so many top fighters, this isn't an easy choice, but since Rashad Evans lost his light-heavyweight belt to Lyoto Machida, GSP is the only Jackson fighter currently with a UFC title. St. Pierre is considered a unanimous top-4 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and has successfully defended his welterweight title twice since regaining it from Matt Serra. He's scheduled to defend for a third time at UFC 100 against Thiago Alves.
FIGHTER PRIMED FOR A BREAKOUT: Demacio Page. Some may remember Page from the episode of TapouT he was featured on. He was most recently seen knocking out highly-ranked Marcos Galvao at WEC 39. The win saw Damacio rocket up the bantamweight rankings, and with his heavy hands and a national platform for the lighter weight classes via WEC on VS., Page could be just a win or two away from a potential title shot.
OTHER NOTABLE FIGHTERS: Rashad Evans, Keith Jardine, Nate Marquardt, Leonard Garcia, Donald Cerrone, David Loiseau, Joey Villasenor, Julie Kedzie, Holly Holm, Michelle Watterson
BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW: Mike Winkeljohn has been Greg Jackson's mentor and kick-boxing coach since they met in 1993.
CAMP PHILOSOPHY: Jackson grew up in a wrestling family and formed his own style based in wrestling and Judo. After seeing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu dominate at the first UFC show, Jackson realized his style needs expansion and added jiu-jitsu and kick-boxing into his teaching. He's also known as possibly the best gameplanner in MMA today, always making sure his fighters are excellently prepared for each specific opponent.
