By: Alex Williams, MMATorch Contributor Snapping losing streaks, Ken Shamrock and Tank Abbott were victorious last night over Ross Clifton and Mike Bourke, respectively. Shamrock dropped the 360 pound Clifton and submitted him with an armbar in one minute. Abbott ended his bout in half that time, KOing Bourke with what may have been illegal blows to the back of the head in 30 seconds.
Williams' Analysis: It's appropriate that this card took place on Friday the 13th because these were scary mismatches. Clifton sported a 6-8 record entering the bout and most of his 360 pounds appeared to be located in his gut. Bourke, with a record of 8-12-1, may be even worse than Clifton. He has been fighting and losing to name and no-name opponents for seemingly ever. Even putting aside that Abbott apparently used illegal blows to stop Bourke, the KO is even less impressive when one considers that 190 pound journeyman judo player Shungo Oyama KOd Bourke in 17 seconds eight years ago.
I'm not against fighters like Shamrock and Abbott facing lesser foes to help them get used to winning again. But Clifton and Rourke were so woefully overmatched that their selection as opponents deserves ridicule. Shamrock is a co-promoter of this organization (WarGods). Hopefully no one rewarded him for his too-careful match making at the box office.
