By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief WAMMA issued a press release regarding the upcoming bout between Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki on the New Year's Eve FieLDS Dynamite!! 2008 card, and FiveOuncesOfPain.com reported on it first this morning, stating that the winner of that bout will be recognized as the first WAMMA Lightweight Champion. The winner will be presented with the WAMMA belt at a later date.
Alvarez and Aoki are two of the top lightweights in the world, and are #2 and #3 respectively in WAMMA's rankings. The two were set to face off in the final of DREAM's lightweight Grand Prix to determine the DREAM Lightweight Champion, but Alvarez came up with an injury and Aoki was subsequently defeated by the man Alvarez beat in the semi-finals, Joachim Hansen.
