For the second time in two years, an amateur MMA fighter has died in the state of South Carolina following a bout.
According to "The Post and Courier" out of Charleston, 30-year-old Tyrone Mims collapsed following his bout at "Conflict MMA Promotions: Fight Night at the Point 6" in Mount Pleasant. He was rushed to Medical University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after life-saving efforts failed. The rest of the event - which was streaming online - was canceled shortly after he was rushed to the hospital.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.
In 2010, amateur fighter Michael Kirkham suffered a brain hemorrhage following a bout in Aiken, S.C. He suffered a knockout in that fight, his second in just over a month.
This also marks the second death in amateur MMA in 2012, following the death of Dustin Jenson in May. His death was eventually attributed to an injury suffered a week prior to his actual fight.
Penick's Analysis: This is an absolute tragedy, and highlights the need for more thorough regulation for the sport. Fighters at this level wind up fighting far too often, or fighting without getting thoroughly examined from a medical standpoint ahead of time. An autopsy will give us a better idea of what happened here, but considering how rare serious injuries are in the sport, for two deaths to happen in one state this close together, it's a sign that something is wrong with those overseeing these events.
