Apr 22, 2009 - 1:05:37 PM By Matt Pelkey, MMATorch Columnist Well that didn't last long. Rich Boles, after winning both the betting and prediction titles at UFC 96, lost both belts in his very first defense to #1 contender Kubi. It wasn't the shortest title reign in contest history. That distinction belongs to your's truly, who, after winning the prediction title (sadly my one and only reign) at an Ultimate Fight Night on a Wednesday, lost the title three days later at a pay-per-view. Beat that!
Anyways, Kubi was able to best Boles in the prediction contest 8-4 to 7-5, and while Boles did hit on a $300 bet on underdog T.J. Grant, it was his only successful bet. Kubi, on the other hand, bet $400 on Grant, not to mention successful bets of $300 and $100 on Nate Quarry and Anderson Silva, respectively. Congrats to Kubi on becoming our second double champ in a row!
There was some fierce competition in the prediction pool, but in the end, newcomer David Shortbull was able to best Scott "The Fountain of Youth" Hart. Both men posted impressive 10-2 records on the night, but when it came down to the tie-breakers, Shortbull came out ahead 5-4. He'll battle Kubi at UFC 98.
Despite a strong performance by Adam Fabbro in the betting pool, Scott Hart was dominant in becoming the new #1 contender. Not a dollar was wasted as he hit on every bet. The Fountain will also take on Kubi at UFC 98. Results follow:

PERFORMER OF THE NIGHT: Scott Hart. Honorable mention goes to Kubi for claiming both titles in one night, but he was out-performed in both contests by The Fountain of Youth.
GOAT OF THE NIGHT: Gavin Byrne. The Melbourne Mauler (the former "Juggernaut" reverts to his previous nickname since his reign of terror is over) posted a pedestrian 7-5 record in predictions and lost all $1000 on his bets. That makes back to back Goat awards for Byrne, and a third would likely see the award renamed after him.

"There's still a large contingent of people, that they just want to see these guys almost die, or the other guy almost die and come back, and sometimes fights are like that. Certainly they are. But sometimes you get technical masterpieces too, and to hate a beautiful, technical fight - you're not really a fight fan...
Diaz has a granite chin, possesses perhaps the best recovery in the sport, his pace and conditioning are second to none and he sets records with the volume of his punches almost every time he steps into the cage. Nick Diaz is simply designed to fight the way he fights, and not many other fighters are...
"There was a lot of poison going on around there and I'm really disappointed because we had a good thing going. It was a good thing and I think people's egos got in the way. Well, not people just Javier, his ego got in the way, and too many cameras in the gym and him trying to build himself up and his brand, his AKA brand...
