BELLATOR 121
JUNE 6, 2014
LIVE FROM THACKERVILLE, OKLAHOMA

-No time wasted getting right to a light heavyweight bout, which apparently is part of a light heavyweight tournament.

FIGHT ONE: EGIDIJUS VALAVICIUS VS. CARLOS EDUARDO (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: After a couple of early strikes from Valavicius, Eduardo scored a takedown. He eventually worked to the back, then transitioned to mount. He got in some strikes, but Valavicius worked out and to his feet. Valavicius threw some strikes late. Very little thrown as far as variable offense is concerned.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Eduardo. Top position and positional control gave him the edge. Not much to the round.

ROUND TWO: Valavicius landed some early strikes as he circled on the outside. He got in a few more strikes before Eduardo shot in. He managed to hold off the takedown attempt. They traded strikes. Eduardo managed to work him back to the ground midway through the round. Valavicius countered and got on top, then moved to his feet. Eduardo landed a hard right hand. Valvicius landed a combination. They traded strikes, with Eduardo getting in a knee. After another exchange, Eduardo got in a combo and Valavicus was cut open.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Eduardo. Valavicius not having much offensive success thus far.

ROUND THREE: They exchanged some early strikes and Valavicius held off a takedown attempt. Eduardo landed a few strikes and the cut opened up more. Eduardo shot in again but got stuffed. Valavicius moved forward and landed a couple of strikes. Eduardo fired back but the strikes were blocked. Valavicius scored several big strikes in a solid flurry, but then he backed off and reset. Valavicius got in another solid combo. Eduardo shot in but failed in the attempt and flopped to his back. Valavicius didn't follow him down, instead landing some kicks. Eduardo stood up, but Valavicius landed several strikes to the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Valavicius. He had most of the offense that round.

WINNER: Valavicius via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

STAR RATING: (*) Not a good fight, questionable enough decision. Doesn't say much for Bellator's light heavyweight field past the top end; not that there was much to say before tonight.

FIGHT TWO: RAMEAU THIERRY SOKOUDJOU VS. TERRY DAVINNEY (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Sokoudjou landed a kick after blocking a strike. Davinney shot in, but Sokoudjou wound up on top. He landed some body strikes, then punches, as Davinney turned into a takedown attempt. Sokoudjou powered him down. Davinney turned into him, they got to their feet, and Davinney picked him up and dropped him down. Sokoudjou landed some strikes from the bottom. Sokoudjou got it turned around and got on top. He landed some big strikes from the top. The referee told Davinney to fight back or he'd stop it. Sokoudjou trapped an arm and moved to mount. Davinney tried to escape, but Sokoudjou held position and landed some somewhat softly thrown strikes. Sokoudjou then locked on a rear naked choke and forced a tap. I just.. I don't even know what to say about that. Davinney wasn't on Sokoudjou's level, which just tells you where Davinney was in the light heavyweight pecking order.

WINNER: Sokoudjou via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:16 of the first round.

STAR RATING: (*+) Sokoudou's not a great fighter; Bellator managed to find an opponent who was considerably worse. It takes effort to find someone at that level.

FIGHT THREE: ERIC PRINDLE VS. JAMES THOMPSON (HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Thompson moved in quick, grabbed a single leg, and scored a takedown at the cage. Prindle got warned for grabbing the cage. He moved to attempt a leg lock, but Thompson moved to side control in the transition. He landed more strikes from side control as Prindle tried to cover up. Thompson landed some knees to the body. Prindle just turtled up and Thompson landed a bunch of strikes. Prindle wasn't defending and the fight was stopped.

WINNER: Thompson via TKO at 1:55 of the first round

STAR RATING: (*) There was just nothing to that fight. Thompson got the easy takedown, Prindle had nothing to offer from his back, covered up, and the fight was stopped. At least it was short.

-Bellator aired a prelim between Steve Garcia and Cody Walker, ended by Garcia with an early KO.

FIGHT FOUR: AUSTIN HEIDLAGE VS. PHILIPE LINS (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: They each pawed out strikes early on, but off the first clinch, Lins scored an easy takedown and took Heidlage's back. He locked on the body triangle as Heidlage tried to stand. Heidlage got to his feet, but Lins was on his back. They battled in that position, Lins locked on a choke, and Heidlage tapped as he got dragged down.

WINNER: Lins via submission (rear naked choke) at 2:45 of the first round

STAR RATING: (*+) Solid finish. Not much more to it than that. Completely random night of fights tonight.

-They re-air another prelim fight, with Ray Sloan choking out Jamelle Jones in 48 seconds.

-Thanks for joining me here tonight. Rich Hansen will be here tomorrow night for the UFC Fight Night 42 event on Fox Sports 1.
