Ben Askren will make the second defense of his Bellator Welterweight Championship on April 6, as the organization announced on Wednesday that he'll take on season five tournament winner Douglas Lima at Bellator 64.
The undefeated Askren, who won Bellator's second season welterweight tournament before capturing the title from Lyman Good, defended the belt in a highly contested split decision over Jay Hieron last October. That win brought the former Olympian wrestler to 9-0 in his MMA career, a career which has been spent mostly in Bellator.
"After my fight with Jay, I went back to work the following Monday to continue my training," Askren said in a release for the fight. "I made no secret I wasn't happy with my performance in that fight, and now having spent over six months training at Roufusport, I'm really confident in my striking. Douglas is a great fighter, but I don't think he'll be able to handle what I bring to the table."
Lima left Canada's Maximum Fighting Championship promotion while still the Champion in order to enter Bellator's season five tournament last year. He defeated Steve Carl by decision in the opening round before knocking out Chris Lozano and UFC vet Ben Saunders in the next two fights to earn his title shot.
"There is no question Ben is a great fighter, and I've been focusing a lot of time on my wrestling," Lima said. "This is the biggest fight of my career, and I'm preparing for it. It's all I think about. Every day from the time I wake up, until the time my head hits the pillow, I'm thinking about April 6 and winning the title."
Bellator 64 will take place from Caesars Windsor in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and will also feature the Bellator season six Featherweight Tournament Semifinals, as well as former UFC and WEC fight er Chris Horodecki.
