Tim Kennedy is getting the fight he asked for, as he will meet Robbie Lawler in a middleweight bout on July 30 at Strikeforce "Fedor vs. Henderson."
After defeating Melvin Manhoef in March, Kennedy said that if he wasn't going to be given a rematch with Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, he wanted the fight with Lawler, and Strikeforce officials made that fight official on Thursday.
An Army veteran and a sniper in the special forces, Kennedy made the transition to MMA full time in 2009, and has gone 4-1 in Strikeforce since doing so. His sole loss came by a five round decision to Souza for the vacant Middleweight Title last August.
Lawler will look to continue his run of alternating wins and losses after a submission loss to Souza in January. Lawler has gone 3-3 in his last six fights over the last three years, but hasn't posted consecutive results in either category in that time.
The July 30 card airs live on Showtime from the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., headlined by a heavyweight bout between Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko.
Penick's Analysis: This is a very good middleweight fight and the most logical for both at this stage in Strikeforce. Kennedy will probably get another title shot if he can pick up this win, while Lawler could score the biggest win he's had in the last several years if he can defeat Kennedy. This July 30 card is shaping up really nicely, and should be a highly entertaining night of fights.
