Saturday's Strikeforce event may not have drawn a massive crowd to the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, but the Heavyweight World Grand Prix concept continues to draw an audience to Showtime.
According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, Saturday's broadcast brought a 1.7 rating to Showtime, with an average audience of 624,000, making it the second most watched Strikeforce event on Showtime, behind the kickoff of the tournament in February.
That event in February, which featured Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva's upset win over Fedor Emelianenko, drew 741,000 viewers to the network. Saturday's broadcast featured the final two quarterfinal bouts in the tournament in Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers, with Overeem and Barnett advancing.
Penick's Analysis: The event was definitely anticipated by viewers who watched the fights in February, but it still lost steam by having such a delay between Grand Prix events. The solid ratings here mean they'll likely draw well on Showtime for the semifinals, although Overeem's fight may hurt that because of how poorly received it was. Still, these are good numbers for Showtime.
