Gina Carano's medical clearance has been revoked by her doctor, and she is out of next Saturday's Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum event from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
The news was revealed by Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker during a media conference call for the event on Tuesday, and he read a prepared statement from Carano about being forced out of her scheduled fight with Sarah D'Alelio.
"I'm seriously disappointed not to be fighting on June 18," the statement read. "I'd like to thank Greg Jackson and Team Jackson for such an amazing [training] camp, and I hope this is only a minor setback."
There was no more information provided on the why her medical clearance was revoked, but the end result is she is out of next week's fight card. It has not yet been determined if D'Alelio will remain on the card, but Coker said a decision would likely be made by the end of the day.
A lightweight bout between K.J. Noons and Jorge Masvidal will take this fight's place on the night's main card on Showtime.
Penick's Analysis: That's an unfortunate loss for this fight card. Carano's return was definitely anticipated after nearly two years out of action, and now there's no telling how long she'll be out. I'm curious to find out exactly what caused doctor's not to clear her to fight, but either way it's too bad she won't be on the card. I can see Strikeforce booking D'Alelio with Julie Kedzie now, who also lost her scheduled opponent. Still, Noons-Masvidal is a more relevant fight for Strikeforce right now, and is a very good replacement for the Showtime portion of the card, but people still wanted to see Carano back in action.
