A lightweight bout between K.J. Noons and Jorge Masvidal is now official for next month's Strikeforce "Overeem vs. Werdum" event from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
The bout was expected to get placed on the card after Shane Del Rosario was forced out of his fight with Daniel Cormier, and Strikeforce officials have now confirmed that the fight will indeed come to the card.
Noons returns to the lightweight division after a jump up to welterweight last October, where he took Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz the distance on Showtime. However, the fight resulted in Noons' first loss since February of 2007.
Masvidal fights for the second time under the Strikeforce banner after a successful debut in March. After losing a catchweight fight to Paul Daley in Shark Fights last fall, Masvidal debuted in Strikeforce against Billy Evangelista in Columbus, earning a unanimous decision after a fairly dominant performance.
Strikeforce "Overeem vs. Werdum" airs live on Showtime on June 18, headlined by the heavyweight fight between Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum.
Penick's Analysis: This June 18 card should be a really enjoyable one on Showtime. With the two Heavyweight World Grand Prix fights, a couple of solid heavyweight alternate fights, Gina Carano's return and this lightweight bout, they've got a nice looking card on paper and it should make for a fun night of fights. This is a very good fight in the lightweight division, and the winner could be tossed into a fight with Gilbert Melendez if they don't attempt to match him up with a UFC lightweight.
