Though Strikeforce erred in announcing a bout between Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal and Ovince St. Preux for June 18 that was not going to be coming to the event, St. Preux is being targeted for a fight this summer.
According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Strikeforce is targeting a bout between St. Preux and former Light Heavyweight Champion Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante for their July event.
St. Preux has been taking a well-deserved rest after taking three fights in Strikeforce in just over a month to finish 2010 and begin 2011. The former NCAA football player at the University of Tennessee, is riding a seven fight win streak that includes four fights in Strikeforce.
After picking up his first seven wins by stoppage, St. Preux has gone to a decision in his last three fights, winning all three over Antwain Britt, Benji Radach, and most recently Abongo Humphrey in January.
Cavalcante will look to rebound from losing his title to Dan Henderson in March in Columbus, Ohio. Cavalcante captured the title in August of 2010 with his third straight win in Strikeforce, a third round TKO over Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal. The loss to Henderson was only his third career defeat, but his second by TKO in the last two years.
No date or location has been set for the July event, but it's also expected to feature Henderson against Fedor Emelianenko, Lawal against Roger Gracie and more.
Penick's Analysis: This is a big step up in competition for St. Preux. He's been impressive in being able to win the three fights in a row he did in about a seven week span, but he's never fought anyone at Cavalcante's level. But that makes for a huge opportunity for him and a chance to pull off an upset. For Cavalcante, it's a fight where he can get back on track against a guy that has gotten some exposure on Showtime recently and has had a lot of success in the last couple of years.
