Herschel Walker was scheduled to meet 40 year old heavyweight Scott Carson on December 4 in St. Louis before a cut suffered in training forced him out of the bout. Now, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com, that bout has been rescheduled for the January 29 card, as the two fighters have agreed to meet at the event on Showtime.
Walker had already been confirmed for the event, taking place from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., but the opponent had not yet been decided.
Walker, the 48-year-old former NFL running back, Heisman Trophy winner and Olympian, made his first foray into MMA this January, defeating Greg Nagy in Miami.
Carson took a near decade-long hiatus from MMA after putting together four wins from 1999-2001. He returned to the sport this summer, suffering a loss to Lorenz Larkin at an event in June.
Strikeforce's January 29 event will air live on Showtime, and is expected to feature a Middleweight Title fight between Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and Robbie Lawler.
Penick's Analysis: Strikeforce had Carson picked for Walker on the 4th for a reason, and with them not rescheduling him for another fight on the St. Louis card it makes sense that this fight was rescheduled. Carson wasn't happy with people counting him out heading into the bout that was supposed to take place this month, and the sentiment likely hasn't changed heading into this one. The fight will be used to bring viewers to see Walker on Showtime, but we'll see if the novelty of seeing Walker fight has worn off from his debut this January.
