Daniel Cormier won't be the only former Olympian fighting on the Strikeforce Challengers 13 card on January 7, as Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com reports that Rhadi Ferguson, member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Judo Team, will meet Ion Cherdivara on the card.
Ferguson, cousin of former EliteXC and UFC heavyweight Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson, is 2-0 in MMA as a light heavyweight and will make his Strikeforce debut in this bout. He was a four time national champion in judo in addition to being an alternate on the 2000 Olympic team.
Strikeforce Challengers 13 takes place from Nashville, Tenn., headlined by a welterweight bout between Tarec Saffiedine and Tyron Woodley. The event will air on live on Showtime.
Penick's Analysis: Ferguson is already 35 years old, but as a highly accomplished judo player making his way into the sport he's got a great background to have some success. How he translates his judo skills into an all around game at this point is an intriguing story, and for the Challengers series this should be a good prospect fight.
