Although Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker stated last week that the bout between Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva and Valentijn Overeem would not be coming on December 4, that's exactly when it will happen.
The organization announced on Tuesday that the two heavyweights would square off on the December 4 card from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The event airs on Showtime.
"Bigfoot" last fought in June at the last Strikeforce event in St. Louis, defeating Andrei Arlovski by decision. The victory bounced him back from only his second career loss, that coming against Fabricio Werdum on CBS last November by decision.
Valentijn, is the older brother of Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem, and is a veteran of over 50 fights. He's entering Strikeforce off of consecutive knockout victories in Europe, though he's just 4-6 over his last ten fights.
The December 4 event airs live on Showtime, and is headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Dan Henderson and Renato "Babalu" Sobral.
Penick's Analysis: It's not the biggest fight in Strikeforce's heavyweight division, but it works to keep Silva active while the top of the division gets sorted out. It will be a decent fight on the Showtime event, but it's one Silva should be heavily favored in. He'll need to win to get his name in the mix to fight Fedor, Werdum or the younger Overeem.
