On the broadcast for Saturday's Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons 2 event on Showtime, the statistics shown at the end of the night's main event from Compustrike showed K.J. Noons outlanding Nick Diaz 310-194 despite losing a unanimous decision.
But the numbers didn't seem correct for many watching the fight, and in fact they were not, as Compustrike has updated their report on the fight. Citing a "glitch" in the system that incorrectly counted the number of arm strikes landed by Noons, they've re-issued their fight report, and the numbers coalesce with what was seen to tell the story of that fight.
Along with the FightMetric report for the fight, both sets of figures confirm a victory for Nick Diaz.
Compustrike's updated report still has Diaz's total strikes at 194 landed, while Noons landed just 25% of his strikes with 155 total strikes.
The FightMetric report, which also factors in grappling and the ground game to come up with an "effectiveness" score in each round, had the fight scored 49-46 for Diaz, with Noons winning just the second round. In the FightMetric report, Diaz landed 130 "significant strikes" to Noons' 110. The majority of Noons' strikes landed to the body, while Diaz concentrated on the head, landing 115 of his strikes to the head of Noons.
Noons deserves credit, however, for fighting through a couple of serious injuries suffered in the fight. It was revealed in x-rays taken after the fight that Noons suffered both a broken hand and a broken jaw. Diaz broke Noons' jaw in the first round, while the broken hand was suffered in the second. But to Noons' credit, he finished out the entirety of the five round fight.
But the updated numbers give a clearer picture as to how the fight went down, and Diaz avenged his last loss in a competitive and enjoyable fight.
