While Fedor Emelianenko will, in fact, be running for political office in his home country of Russia, the rumor going around that he will retire when his Strikeforce contract is up appears to be false.
"He may run (for political office), that is true," said Evgeni Kogan, M-1's director of global operations in a statement made to USA Today. "But there is no truth to the retirement rumors."
That's good news for MMA fans everywhere, as well as Strikeforce, who would have been in a difficult position with a need to give Emelianenko a title shot against Alistair Overeem with a win over Fabricio Werdum. Had he been planning on retiring he possibly could have won the title and left.
Penick's Analysis: That's definitely good news that the retirement talk was strictly rumors and nothing more. Fedor is still only 33 years old, and despite his status as the best heavyweight in the sport's young history, there are still a lot of challenges fans want to see him face. Those are all in the UFC, of course, which means even if he continues to fight those questions still have a chance of never being answered. Still, the fight with Overeem is now safer than it felt like this morning, and hopefully it still comes to fruition after his fight with Fabricio Werdum later this month.
