By: Alex Williams, MMATorch Contributor Affliction newcomer Chase Gormley will battle Ben Rothwell at the August 1 "Affliction: Trilogy" event, Affliction VP Tom Atencio told MMA FanHouse at a "Trilogy" press conference today. Gormley, 25, sports a 6-0 record in professional MMA according to Sherdog, though the mixedmartialarts.com database lists three of those wins as having come in amateur contests. His most significant victory came in his last match, a unanimous decision win over Eric Pele in May 2008. Before starting his MMA career, Gormley wrestled at Lindenwood University, where he was an NAIA All-American.
Williams' Analysis: My heart's with Gormley because he's representing the NAIA Heart of America Athletic Conference, the same conference I played tennis in (well, if you consider riding the bench playing). But in addition to the ring rust he'll be dealing with (having not fought in 15 months by fight time), he also has a much more experienced opponent in Ben Rothwell. Rothwell carries a record of 30-6 and is a borderline Top 10 heavyweight. Gormley's wrestling could give Rothwell some difficulty, but "Big Ben" is not easy to takedown. Rothwell is the significant favorite to win this bout, likely by knock out.
