By Matt Pelkey, MMATorch Columnist Sources close to former UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia confirmed to MMA Fanhouse that a bout between he and former Strikefore heavyweight champ and UFC contender Paul Buentello will take place at Affliction's third event, Trilogy, on August 1st. Buentello confirmed that he has signed the bout agreement and Sylvia would be doing the same shortly.
Sylvia headlined Affliction's first outing against Fedor Emelianenko, getting choked out in 36 seconds in his last fight. Buentello has gone 2-0 on Affliction's first two shows, defeating Gary Goodridge and Kirill Sidelnikov.
Before fighting Buentello, Sylvia still has to box Ray Mercer in a six round bout at Adrenaline's third show in Birmingham, AL on June 13th.
Pelkey's Analysis: I'm actually amazed these two guy's paths have never crossed before. They were both at or near the top of the UFC's heavyweight division around the same time. It's another good bout from Affliction, but its just starting to feel like they're rotating around the same six or so guys to fight each other in their heavyweight division. If they really have any hopes of sustaining their existence, they need to start looking for some up-and-coming prospects to feature so they can add some depth and create some fresh match-ups. This is starting to sound like an analysis of WWE.
