Strikeforce's planned January event may now have a date and its first fight, as MMAFighting.com reports that Nate Marquardt will defend the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship against Tarec Saffiedine on January 12.
Marquardt, a longtime UFC veteran in the middleweight division, made his welterweight and Strikeforce debuts earlier this year, knocking out Tyron Woodley in vicious fashion to capture the title. It was his first fight in over a year after his UFC release in 2011.
Saffiedine, whose lone loss in Strikeforce came against Woodley in January of 2011, has won three straight fights since then. His most recent win came in August, where he defeated Roger Bowling at Strikeforce "Rousey vs. Kaufman."
