Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante's camp has not filed an official appeal with the California State Athletic Commission as initially reported. Instead, the former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion has requested testing of his "B" sample from a May 18 drug test prior to his fight with Mike Kyle on Showtime.

The "A" sample came back positive for the steroid stanozolol, prompting the CSAC to hand down a one-year suspension to Cavalcante, along with a $2,500 fine and the overturning of his 33-second victory over Kyle into a "no decision." It was initially reported that his camp was appealing the ruling, but now MMAJunkie.com reports that they're waiting until results of his "B" sample come back before they make their move.

In addition to the request, they are also asking that a representative from the camp be present for the opening of the sample and "possibly the lab analyzing the sample." The "B" sample is expected to be tested on June 26.

Penick's Analysis: For those unfamiliar with the process, when drug tests are done, the sample provided is split into two separate samples. If the first sample comes back negative, the "B" sample is not tested. However, if a positive result is found in the "A" sample, the offending party can request that the "B" sample be tested as well. This is to assure that there wasn't anything that had contaminated the first sample, or in a case like this, to argue that something had contaminated the first sample by trying to show nothing wrong with the second sample. Of course, if the "B" sample comes back with the same result, Cavalcante won't likely have a strong argument for his innocence in this case.
