Brock Lesnar retired from the sport of Mixed Martial Arts on Friday night after losing in the first round to a powerful and more experience stand-up contender, Alistair Overeem. Lesnar took a knee to the body and then a roundhouse kick to the ribcage and collapsed in pain. He covered his head. Overeem continued a barrage of punches to Lesnar's arms as they covered his head. When he moved to a body blow, the ref stepped in and called an end to the fight.
Afterward, a dejected and choked up Lesnar said he promised his wife and kids that if he lost tonight, he'd retire from MMA. He said had he won, he would have moved on to a title fight, which win or lose would have been his last fight. In the post-fight press conference, Dana White said he doesn't begrudge Lesnar his decision. He said when a fighter feels he's done, he needs to quit.
