"I didn't realize he was out that long. I knew he was going out because I could tell how deep it was, but for the most part, I was choking him with one arm – which that's how I beat Dominick Cruz (in 2007), with one arm. I had it covered, but he kept fighting my hands. I knew he was going out, but I didn't realize he was that bad. He was stiffed up. It was kind of scary. I looked up, and I was like, 'What just happened?'"
-Urijah Faber talks to MMAJunkie.com after his win over Takeya Mizugaki on Thursday and comments on the scary end to the fight with Mizugaki choked unconscious.
Penick's Analysis: It was a very scary and really unfortunate situation with the choke being held on too long on the card last night, but everyone involved was just in a really tough spot. It was tough for Faber to tell if Mizugaki was fighting the choke or if he was out as he turned him into the cage for leverage. With that position, it was even harder for referee Josh Rosenthal to see that Mizugaki had gone out. Thankfully, Faber stayed still after releasing the choke and waited for the doctor's to tend to Mizugaki so as not to risk any further damage to his opponent, and did exactly what he was supposed to in that situation. Mizugaki recovered and, again thankfully, was alright after the scary moment, so it's just good that it wasn't as bad as it initially appeared.
