Eddie Wineland was forced out of a bout with Damacio Page on this Thursday's WEC 52 card in Las Vegas, but according to a report from MMAFighting.com, the first ever WEC Bantamweight Champion will get back into action at WEC 53 next month.
Per the report, Wineland will meet promotional newcomer Ken Stone, a 9-1 American Top Team product out of Massachusetts.
Wineland is on a bit of a roll, having won three straight fights in the WEC. His most recent win came by TKO over Will Campuzano in a very exciting fight at WEC 49 in June.
Stone enters the WEC for the first and only time before the merger with the UFC with nine career wins, all by stoppage. His sole loss was by split decision against Jason McLean in 2009, a fight in which he broke his foot.
WEC 53 will be the final event for World Extreme Cagefighting, and takes place from the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz. The card is headlined by a Lightweight Championship bout between Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis, and also features a Bantamweight Championship bout between Dominick Cruz and Scott Jorgensen.
Penick's Analysis: This fight is likely coming to the preliminary card, but the winner will vault into the pack of the new UFC bantamweight division in 2011. Wineland, as a former Champion in the division, will be looking to make a run back up the ladder, but this is a great opportunity for the newcomer in Stone to make some noise before the WEC folds into the UFC.
