While WEC 49 in June did not have a major marquee fight, the next two WEC events continue to be filled with big time fights. According to a report from MMAWeekly.com, WEC 51 in September will now play host to a Featherweight Championship bout between Jose Aldo and Manny Gamburyan.
Aldo, the 17-1 Champion, continued his stranglehold on the featherweight division with his tenth straight victory in April, defeating Urijah Faber by decision in a dominant performance. Aldo has a perfect record in the WEC, winning all seven of his fights inside the blue cage.
Gamburyan earned picked up his third straight victory in the WEC since dropping to the featherweight division this April, as he knocked out former Champion Mike Brown on the Aldo vs. Faber pay-per-view to earn this title shot.
WEC 51 is set to take place from the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo. on Sept. 30, and will also feature a return to action for former Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres.
Penick's Analysis: This was the expected next fight after both of their performances in April, and with Josh Grispi sustaining a hairline fracture in his bout with LC Davis Gamburyan was the only one ready to be the next title challenger. This should be another really good Featherweight Championship bout, as Gamburyan has found a resurgence at 145 lb., and Aldo is always a treat to watch. Even though WEC 49 ended up being a great fight card, WEC 50 and WEC 51 are getting stacked with recognizable names and awesome fights.

"There's still a large contingent of people, that they just want to see these guys almost die, or the other guy almost die and come back, and sometimes fights are like that. Certainly they are. But sometimes you get technical masterpieces too, and to hate a beautiful, technical fight - you're not really a fight fan...

"There was a lot of poison going on around there and I'm really disappointed because we had a good thing going. It was a good thing and I think people's egos got in the way. Well, not people just Javier, his ego got in the way, and too many cameras in the gym and him trying to build himself up and his brand, his AKA brand...
