UFC FIGHT NIGHT 58
DECEMBER 20, 2014
LIVE FROM BARUERI, SAO PAULO, BRAZIL

Note for tonight: I've been violently ill all afternoon, so we'll have only quick results on these prelims tonight. Hoping to have full report for the main card!

=====Preliminary Card Quick Results=====

-Vitor Miranda def Jake Collier via TKO at 4:59 of the first round

-Tim Means def. Marcio Alexandre, Jr. via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

-Leandro Issa def. Yuta Sasaki via submissio (rear naked choke) at 4:13 of the second round

-Hacran Dias def. Darren Elkins via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

-Renato Moicano def. Tom Niinimaki via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:30 of the second round

-Marcos Rogerio de Lima def. Igor Pokrajac via TKO at 1:59 of the first round

=====Fox Sports 1 Main Card=====

Note: Still not in condition to follow a full report at the moment. Will have round by round for at least the main and co-main events, though.

-Daniel Sarafian def. Antônio dos Santos Jr. via TKO (injury) at 1:01 of the second round

Note: Fight ended when dos Santos, Jr. dislocated a finger throwing a punch and walked off. He popped it back in quickly, but the ref had already called it off by then.

-Erick Silva def. Mike Rhodes via technical submission (arm triangle choke) at 1:15 of the first round

Note: Easy fight for Silva. Scored an early takedown, passed easy to side control, locked up the arm triangle choke, and kept tweaking it until Rhodes went out cold. Very nice, if expected, victory from Silva.

-Rashid Magomedov def. Elias Silverio via TKO at 4:57 of the third round

Note: Competitive fightbrings the latest three round stoppage in the UFC. Nice work from both for most of the fight, and Magomedov just secured the finish with a well timed hook and follow up strikes late.

-Patrick Cummins def. Antonio Carlos Junior via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Note: Sustained top control from Cummins for three rounds. He had to defend a leg lock in the first, and then a late surge of back control in the third, but outside of that he controlled Carlos Junior from the top, landing punches, and staying busy enough to avoid standups.

CO-MAIN EVENT: RENAN BARAO VS. MITCH GAGNON (BANTAMWEIGHT)

- As the broadcast comes back for the final hour, it's the beginning of UFC 173. Apparently they lost the live feed from Brazil.

Barao followed with a hard leg kick. Barao landed a big jab. He missed an overhand right and Gagnon clinched him to the cage. Barao successfully pressed Gagnon off. He ate an uppercut. He quickly rushed in and tried to take Gagnon's back. Gagnon posted up and got back to his feet, recovered. Gagnon turned him around and shot in for a takedown, but Barao remained perfect in his takedown defense in the UFC. They traded knees at the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Barao. Gagnon was on his way to winning that round, but the knockdown turned that in Barao's favor. Competitive fight thus far, though, and Gagnon's equating himself well.

ROUND TWO: Gagnon tried to press in, but Barao countered with several strikes. Gagnon landed a couple of punches, but ate a big leg kick. Gagnon got double underhooks in the clinch and drove Barao to the cage. He landed some knees at the cage. The crowd booed the clinch. He dropped for a single leg attempt to no avail. They were separated with three and a half minutes left. Gagnon landed a few punches in combination. Barao fired off a kick, then ate a few punches. Gagnon swinging for the fences here. They were separated again. They both swung furiously as they restarted. Gagnon's was connecting on some hard strikes. Barao got in a knee as Gagnon clinched again. Barao landed some hard elbows, then went for a kimura briefly before letting the arm go. The crowd booed the failed takedown attempts from Gagnon. They traded strikes in close, with Barao landing a hard knee. Barao turned him around, and the round ended in the clinch.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Barao. Gagnon's landing some really good strikes, but he's getting out-worked a bit in this one. Still close.

ROUND THREE: Barao landed a few kicks as Gagnon pressed in. Barao landed a few strikes. Gagnon tried to fire back and clinch. Barao pressed in. Barao clinched and drove Gagnon to the cage. Gagnon worked to his feet and turned Barao around. He ate some knees. Gagnon got in a short elbow and a knee before backing off. He tried to shoot in, but gave up position, and Barao took him down, passing easily into the mount. He set up the arm triangle choke, passed to side control, and Gagnon had to tap.

WINNER: Barao via submission (arm triangle choke) at 3:53 of the third round

STAR RATING: (**+) Gagnon gave Barao more of a fight than most probably expected, but he just didn't have the gas tank to actually stay with Barao's output for a full 15 minutes. Barao worked hard for the win, got the finish, and looked solid in his first fight since losing the title.

MAIN EVENT: LYOTO MACHIDA VS. C.B. DOLLAWAY (MIDDLEWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Dollaway circled around to his left and tried to press in. Machida patiently waited for his move. Machida landed an inside leg kick. Dollaway threw a high kick that was easily blocked. Machida hurt Dollaway with a hard body kick. Dollaway went down at the cage, Machida followed up with a bunch of strikes on the ground, and Dollaway couldn't do anything but cover up. There it is. Dollaway was in serious pain after the stoppage.

WINNER: Machida via TKO at 1:02 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**+) Just absolutely brutal. Body kicks like that can be so visceral and brutal, and the pain on Dollaway's face was immediately evident. There just wasn't anything he could do after that one. Sick finish from Machida to cap the night off.

-That's the report for tonight! Should have lots more follow up during the week as this illness hopefully runs its course!
