SEPTEMBER 5, 2014
LIVE FROM MASHANTUCKET, CONNECTICUT

=====Fox Sports 1 Prelims=====

Note: Jamie Penick here for the first hour of the prelims, Rich will be taking back over once he gets settled in at home!

Jon Anik and Kenny Florian open up the broadcast discussing what's coming on the card tonight. They're likely to take their time establishing things tonight with the loss of the Oliveira-Lentz fight this afternoon.

FIGHT ONE: CHAS SKELLY VS. SEAN SORIANO (FEATHERWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Skelly wasted no time taking the center. He threw a front kick, then grabbed a clinch and tried to take Soriano down. Soriano did a great job holding off the attempt and turning him around. Skelly stayed on the takedown with a body lock, though, and he took him down. Soriano scrambled to his feet but Skelly took his back and tried to get his hooks in standing. Skelly used the cage to nearly jump up to lock on the position but Soriano continued to fight it. Very interesting battle on the cage. Skelly finally dragged Soriano back to the ground. However, he lost position, and Soriano got on top, dropping down some good ground and pound. Skelly then rolled and tried to trap Soriano's leg. He nearly got him into position for a calf slicer, then used that to scramble and again take Soriano's back. Skelly tried to get under the chin for the rear naked choke, but Soriano did a good job defending. Skelly threw some strikes, then again went for the choke. It turned to a bit of a crank, but Soriano got free and rolled to top position, landing a couple of strikes before the round ended. Good battle that round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Skelly. Good ground work from Skelly, solid defense from Soriano. Nice transitions, patient work from both. Entertaining round.

ROUND TWO: Soriano closed distance early and landed a hard combination. Skelly was visibly tired, and Soriano took advantage. Skelly tried to close the distance but looked exhausted. They traded strikes. Skelly tossed out some wild strikes. Skelly closed the distance and clinched, but as he did so landed a knee between the legs, negating the takedown as the action was halted due to the groin strike. Herb Dean restarted them on the ground, even though the groin strike happened before the takedown. Wow. Not good. Soriano tried to scramble out and Skelly took his back again. Skelly again tried to lock on the choke. Soriano scrambled out, but Skelly got his back again. The battle continued, though Soriano wasn't letting Skelly do a ton offensively. Skelly transitioned to mount as Soriano continued trying to battle out. He landed some big strikes and got the back again. He got the choke once again, but it wasn't quite under the chin. Soriano continued fighting and got loose. Skelly held position, landed a couple of strikes, and attacked for the choke again to no avail. Skelly rode out the round with both hooks in, throwing a few strikes.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Skelly. Dean cost Soriano that round. The takedown happened off the low blow, and yet after stopping because of the illegal blow, he still restarted in the advantageous position gained by said legal blow. Really terrible call.

ROUND THREE: Skelly labored forward, and got stuffed as he shot in. Soriano unleashed a combination. Skelly landed a right hand as he rushed forward, then shot in for a single leg. Soriano landed a couple of elbows but got taken down, and Skelly took his back again. For all the praise Soriano's gotten from his camp, he's getting controlled by a gassed out fighter who just fought two weeks ago. Skelly got the hooks in again and went for the choke, but Soriano got out of it. Soriano scrambled out, but Skelly grabbed his leg. Soriano tried to roll around and he wound up on top Soriano landed some elbows from the top. He tried to posture up and unload, but wasn't putting a ton together. Skelly got his legs up and attacked for an armbar. Soriano snuck out, then Skelly went right for a leg. Soriano got out, but Skelly rolled back on top of him into side control. He then went to mount. Soriano almost reversed, but he's gassed out now too. Skelly took his back again, landing a couple of strikes. Skelly then dragged him back down. He went for the choke again to no avail, but ended the fight with a few strikes on top.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Skelly. It wasn't pretty, but he should pick up his second UFC win in a 13-day stretch, which would be a modern UFC record.

WINNER: Skelly via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

STAR RATING: (**-) It wasn't a good fight, per se, it was real ugly, and Skelly struggled with his gas tank after cutting weight for two fights in 13 days. He was so very exhausted afterward, and looked in pain. He said "my cardio's not this bad, I promise guys. It was two weight cuts in a row. It killed me." Skelly's a very solid prospect, but even with that, this hurts Soriano's status as a prospect in his own right, because he should have been the fresh guy here, and allowed a completely exhausted fighter to control him for most of the 15-minute fight.

-They aired a preview of TUF 20, which kicks off on Wednesday night on Fox Sports 1.

FIGHT TWO: CHRIS BEAL VS. TATEKI MATSUDA (BANTAMWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Matsuda opened up with some kicks after taking the center. He landed a left hook and tried to get in close, but Beal circled out. Beal landed a hard punch, then caught a kick and scored a takedown. Matsuda threw some strikes off his back. Beal tried to pass out of half guard. Matsuda almost escaped, but Matsuda remained on top. Matsuda tried to transition out, but Beal nearly locked on a choke. Matsuda was opened up somewhere, as he was bleeding. He popped out of the choke, though, and wound up on top. Matsuda locked him in the mounted crucifix briefly and landed some strikes. Beal got his arm free, but Matsuda held side control. Beal got loose, and landed a nice combination as they got to their feet. Matsuda connected on a hard kick to the body. Matsuda's face was busted up badly, and the doctor was called in to check the cut. He was fine to continue. On replay, the cut came from an elbow when Beal was in half guard. As they restarted, Matsuda moved in and landed a hard right hand. Beal missed a counter strike. They traded strikes in the center. Beal landed a couple of uppercuts. Matsuda landed a hard leg kick as he tried to back Beal up. Beal landed a solid right hand after Matsuda missed. Both reached in with missed strikes. Matsuda landed a hard leg kick again and Beal limped. They traded strikes before the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Beal. Close round, but Beal's offense on the ground and feet was slightly better than that of Matsuda.

ROUND TWO: Matsuda came out switching stances up and throwing kicks from both sides. He landed a body kick and covered up as Beal tried to counter. Matsuda landed another hard inside leg kick. Beal got in a good knee to the body in a clinch. Matsuda landed the outside leg kick again. Matsuda landed a big right hand. Matsuda landed an overhand right. Beal landed a reach in strike. Matsuda landed a combination. Both missed big winging strikes, then Beal got in a short right hand. Matsuda landed the leg kick again, but barely missed a head kick attempt. Matsuda landed a good right hand. Beal nearly landed the overhand right. Matsuda got in a couple of kicks to the body. Beal tried to close the distance, but his punches were blocked. He connected on a left hand. Matsuda continued to work on the outside. He landed another jab. Matsuda snuck behind Beal standing, but Beal reversed on the way down and got the mount. He landed a few big elbows as he got pulled back to half guard. Beal landed some big elbows. More ground and pound from Beal, who was doing damage on the ground. Beal postured up late and landed a few strikes.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Matsuda. Beal may have stolen the round with that final 40 seconds of ground offense, but it was close, and he was definitely losing the round clearly prior to reversing that takedown.

ROUND THREE: Matsuda opened with more leg kicks. Matsuda tossed out a few jabs. Matsuda landed a right hand. He clinched and tried to take Beal down, but Beal reversed and tossed him right to the ground. Beal took his back in a scramble, then powered him over, briefly to mount. Matsuda escaped that and put Beal in his guard. Matsuda kicked off the cage and went for his own takedown. Beal swept him during the attempt and got back on top. Beal moved to half guard. He passed to mount and landed a few big strikes. Beal nearly grabbed an arm, but lost position back to Matsuda's guard. Beal continued to work from the top with ground and pound. He landed more strikes, then transitioned out and took Matsuda's back as they stood up. Beal picked him up and dropped him down. Matsuda stood again, and Beal landed a knee before Matsuda tried to shoot in. Beal landed some strikes and separated to finish the fight.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Beal. Put a stamp on the fight with that round. Matsuda just couldn't do much down the stretch here.

WINNER: Beal via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

STAR RATING: (*+) Not much to the fight, with some considerable dull stretches in there. It wasn't horrible, but there was a lot of it no better than "dull."

- Rich here. I finally get to cover a UFC for the site, and I get stuck with Chris Camozzi and Rafael Natal. I thought hazing wasn't acceptable anymore?

FIGHT THREE: CHRIS CAMOZZI VS. RAFAEL NATAL (MIDDLEWEIGHT)

- Keith Peterson is the referee for this contest.

ROUND ONE: Natal comes out throwing and landing a few leg kicks while circling away from Camozzi's powerful left hand. Natal working the body with a right hook. And again. Camozzi flicks out a double jab. He's landing some hard leg kicks as well. Camozzi goes high with a head kick, but it didn't land hard. Camozzi drills Natal and he gets on his bike until his senses return. Camozzi lands yet another inside leg kick, then just misses with a right hook. Natal shoots a single, but there's literally nothing there. Natal goes right-left double leg combo but doesn't come close to getting Camozzi down. Camozzi's nose is as red as Mickey Rooney's, albeit for different reasons. Too trendy? OK, it's bleeding like Mrs. Mia Wallace's nose. Better? Natal follows a wild right with a double leg and gets Camozzi down. Camozzi's using the fence to get up, but Natal's making him work for it by getting on his back as Camozzi gets up. Natal switches off the back, and Camozzi turns him around so he has Natal's back up against the fence. They disengage. Camozzi charges in, but Natal puts Camozzi on the fence. Stalemate, separation. Camozzi with another leg kick. 10-9 Camozzi

Hansen's Analysis: That did not suck. more action than I expected, although it came only in spurts.

ROUND TWO: Replay shows the combo that reddened Camozzi's nose. And by reddened I mean broke. Natal lands a right hook to the body. Fighters trade leg kicks. Leg kick by Natal. And another. He shoots a double but gets stuffed immediately. Leg kick from Camozzi. Natal checked it. Camozzi charges in behind a wild right hook and presses Natal onto the fence. Natal gets free and hits a takedown into side control. He's pretty low on Camozzi's body, and Camozzi is able to get to his feet with Natal still draped on him. They spin along the fence trying to get dominant position while Keith PEterson gets bored. Camozzi pushes free and we're back to the middle. This round is not as good as the first. There's been a ton of missed killshots this round, and both guys look gassed. Camozzi lands a knee form the clinch. Camozzi works the body and gets Natal along the fence. Natal switches and has Camozzi on the fence now. Thirty seconds left. Camozzi gets the underhooks and turns positions. Camozzi lands a right hand as they separate. Soft head kick from Camozzi as the horn sounds. 20-18 Camozzi

Hansen's Analysis: I'm trying to see positives here.

ROUND THREE: Natal with a straight kick above Camozzi's right knee. THAT'S SO DIRTY!. Oh, wait, this isn't a Jon Jones fight. So no one thinks it's dirty. Natal eats a right hand from Camozzi. Natal's gassed, so naturally everything he throws has 150% power on it. He's missing badly and landing on a single knee every time. Camozzi's starting to pick his shots here. This is getting really ugly. Natal works the body again, and almost falls on his face while bending low enough to get to the body. Camozzi's landing at will. I just counted seven jabs in a row all landing. Natal shoots, but Camozzi sprawls and uses an underhook to put Natal's back on the cage. Natal is 2/12 in takedown attempts. Camozzi is outlanding Natal 25-8 in total strikes this round. Body kick from Camozzi. Camozzi throws Natal to the canvas. Natal pops back up and eats half a dozen solid strikes for his efforts. Camozzi backs off and clinches, willing to take his decision. Peterson breaks them up after fifteen seconds or so. With fifteen seconds left in the fight, Natal throws nothing. I love that. It'll look good on his resume when he fights for Titan next time out.

Hansen's Analysis: 30-27 Camozzi. Camozzi is average, Natal is much worse than average. What? You want more than that? He has a great body and a beautiful girlfriend. Google it.

WINNER: Rafael Natal by split decision (29-28 across the board)

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: You know what? Screw this sport.

FIGHT FOUR: AL IAQUINTA VS. RODRIGO DAMM (LIGHTWEIGHT)

- The referee for this fight will be Herb Dean. Iaquinta closed as a six to one favorite.

ROUND ONE: Damm cracks Iaquinta with a hard right hand to the face. That was sneaky. Iaquinta lands a slappy leg kick. Damm lands a hard body kick, but Iaquinta responds by charging in bhind a stiff two punch combination. Nice high kick from Iaquinta backs Damm up a little. Nice leg kick from Iaquinta, followed by a liver punch. Iaquinta lands a hard counter left hand to the face of Damm. Damm has nothing, and at this rate expect Iaquinta to wear him out and finish late. Damm eats a big right hand after failing on a single leg takedown attempt, and he has to get on his bike in order to clear the cobwebs. Iaquinta is stalking the circling Damm, who just wants to end the round without getting punched again. Iaquinta has no respect for Damm, dropping both hands to his waist. 10-9 Iaquinta Damm has to give up on the standing thing and get this fight down.

ROUND TWO: Iaquinta with a jab to Damm's knee. Respect, Mang. Respect. Damm lands to the body. Iaquinta lands a boubke jab and a right hook. Both guys trading strikes int eh center, but of course Iaquinta lands the bigger shots, culminating with a left hook. Iaquinta is toying with Damm like a cat with a mouse. Iaquinta lands a stiff leg kick. Damm continues to try to trade and is going to lose that battle every time. Damm's done nothing to hurt Iaquinta. Big right from Iaquinta. Of course, Damm will win a split decision here. Damm has been changing stances frequently here, out of desperation rather than out of strategery. Iaquinta to the body. This is impressive, but he's so much better than Damm that it doesn't mean anything. Damm eats a head kick. It's like Seattle toying with the Packers last night. Sure Seattle looked good, but who wouldn't look good against such a crap defense. Damm looks drunk, he so unsteady on his feet. Damm shoots a single leg and it's very deep. Iaquinta stays upright and lands a standing elbow. Damm looks awful. 20-18 Iaquinta is just sparring. He coudl finish this if he wanted.

ROUND THREE: Iaquinta goes high, low, inside, outside, all in the first twenty seconds of the round. Iaquinta lands a hard left hand to the body. Iaquinta drops Damm with a right hand to the ear and uimmediately walks away. Herb Dean didn't stop the fight. Damm didn't want to get up. Dean almost stops the fight and Damm reluctantly gets up. What a cluster... Iaquinta stalking a woozy Damm, but Damm lands a big right hand. Head kick from Iaquinta was blocked, but Iaquinta gets inside and lands a swinging right elbow to Damm's temple. Damm is down, and Dean stops the fight this time. Damm didn't like the stoppage, but so what if he didn't, as he almost quit on his back a minute earlier.

WINNER: Al Iaquinta by TKO at 2:41 in the third round.

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (**) Damm is bad at fighting. Maybe he's good at math and could become an accountant. The finishing sequence was very violent. But Kenny Florian, no, he does NOT look like he can "Beat anyone." Settle down, son.

- With lots of time to kill due to the loss of the Lentz vs. Oliveira fight, they run video packages on Michael Chiesa and Joe Lauzon. more of this, please, and fewer video game and Nicolas Cage movie commercials. Thanks.

FIGHT FIVE: JOHN MORAGA VS. JUSTIN SCOGGINS (FLYWEIGHT)

- Scoggins is unranked in the division, but is -240 over the #5 ranked Moraga.

- Both these guys have their names tattoed on their backs, which would totally ruin the movie Memento.

- The referee for this fight is Mario Yamasaki.

ROUND ONE: No feeling out here, as both guys are landing kicks galore from the outset. Moarage overcommits to a lunging jab and Scoggins takes him down with a blast double leg. Full guard. Moraga had Scoggins's neck in a guillotine, but Scoggins got free relatively quickly there. Scoggins passes to half guard. He tried for side control, but got tied up and is back in full guard now. Scoggins is being active, but not landing anything at all. Two minutes remain. Half-guard again. Full guard. Scoggins is landing an elbow here, a sit there. Not much offense from the top of Scoggins. Moraga has Scoggins neck again, but his hands aren't clasped so there's no danger of a submission. It's just positional. Scoggins gets free and hops to side control. They're near enough to the cage where Moraga gets up with thirty seconds left. Moraga moves forward and gets taken down in the exact same manner. 10-9 Scoggins Moraga is going to need to fight smarter.

ROUND TWO: Scoggins lands a spinning back kick. Andthere's another takedown. Moraga is getting stacked up in the middle of the cage, but he has Scoggins' neck.

OK, let's quote Kenny Florian here.

Florian: "Yeah, he doesn't have position to finish it. A little too flat on his back."

- Scoggins taps.

Yamasaki: "STOP STOP STOP!"

That's right. Moraga got the guillotine submission. This was the exact opposite of Joe Rogan's call of the Barboza KO of Terry Etim.

Kenny Florian, maybe you can be an accountant with Rafael Natal, too,

WINNER: John Moraga by submission (guillotine) at 0:47 in round two.

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (***) That was crazy. Scoggins controlled the first round, but he forgot about the couple times Moraga had his neck in that round. He gave it up again in the second, a second round that was going to completely mimic the first round by the way, and Moraga got a guillotine with little to no leverage.

=====Fox Sports 1 Main Card=====

- Only six hours between the last fight and this one.

- OK, it just seems that way.

FIGHT ONE: JOE LAUZON VS. MICHAEL CHIESA (LIGHTWEIGHT)

- The referee for this fight is Herb Dean.

ROUND ONE: This should be awesome. Chiesa flicks about a million jabs before a front kick that Lauzon catches and turns into a takedown. Chiesa gets back up, but Lauzon is on him like omethign sticky on something else that's sticky. Chiesa reverses position, Lauzon is able to separate and disengage. Chiesa is flicking out a million jabs from the southpaw stance, just trying to keep Lauzon off him. Lauzon pressures inside and initiates a bodylock clinch on the cage. Lauzon's trying hard for the takedown, but again Chiesa stops it. Chiesa actually trips Lauzon and follows him down. He's on Lauzon's back, looking for the choke. He's got one of the hooks, but Lauzon turns and is now on top. He's got the mount. Chiesa gives up his back, belly down with Lauzon riding him like a horse. Lauzon pounds away. Lauzon is looking for the choke with his own back against the fence now. This is just great. Chiesa defending the choke, but it eating hard left hands to the ear.Chiesa escapes and gets to his feet. That was fantastic. Lauzon and Chiesa are swinging and kicking and flying kneeing like crazy. Nothing's landing hard, but it look fantastic. 10-9 Lauzon Really, you should score that round 11-11, because it was nuts. Round could go either way.

ROUND TWO: Chiesa eats a combination while circling into Lauzon's power side. Chiesa with a body lock. Chiesa throws a knee, but it gets caught by Lauzon and Lauzon takes him down. ROLLING KIMURA attempt by Lauzon. He still has it as they get to their feet. Chiesa elbows his way free. Lauzon works the body. UYppercut. Big knee from Lauzon! These guys are in the clinch just trading firs. BIG body shot from Chiesa. Chiesa's got a huge cut over his right eye and Dean pauses the fight for the doctor to look at it.

Guys, this fight is just freaking nuts.

The fight is over. The doctor stopped the fight. That cut was brutal, and it's a good stoppage, but... damn. I want five rounds.

WINNER: Joe Lauzon by TKO (doctor stoppage, cut) at 2:14 in the second round

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (****) One of my favorite fights of the year so far. It sucks that the fight was stopped prematurely. I mean, good stoppage, but the fight was rolling into something absolutely crazy. A rematch has to happen.

FIGHT TWO: MATT MITRIONE VS. DERRICK LEWIS (HEAVYWEIGHT)

- It's Heavyweight Monster Smashing Clubbering Time! This will either be the best 2 minutes or the worst 15 minutes of my life.

- Mario Yamasaki is the referee here. Good luck, sir.

ROUND ONE: I'll recap this on the replay, but Meathead KO'd Lewis in like 30 seconds.

WINNER: Matt Mitrione by KO at :41 in the first round.

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (***** on the clubbering scale) (**+ on the skill scale) Mitrione landed a head kick 25 seconds in. 5 seconds later Lewis threw a looping hook and Mitrione threw an uppercut that landed harder and faster than Lewis' hook. Both landed, but Lewis couldn't eat it properly and crumpled in a heap. Mad credit to him for trying to get up with Meathead tenderizing his brain with a dozen punches on the mat. This fight meant nothing, but I need to go take a cold shower now.

FIGHT THREE: ALISTAIR OVEREEM VS. BEN ROTHWELL (HEAVYWEIGHT)

-Time for more clubbering! Keith PEterson better be paying attention in there.

ROUND ONE: Overeem lands a push kick to the knee and an overhand right. Rothwell eats a knee to the midsection, then an uppercut. And a knee. And a body kick. Overhand right. And yes, all from Overeem. Another lateral kick to the lead leg of Rothwell. Overeem fakes a shot because why not. Rothwell lands a huge uppercut. Overeem is stunned! Overeem grabs a charging Rothwell and puts him on the fence. They separate, and I think Overeem avoided a huge disaster there. Knee to the body from Overeem. Left hand from Rothwell drops Overeem. Rothwell attacks. It's over! OH MY GOD, ROTHWELL DID IT! It was a right hand to the ear that dropped him. Once Rothwell got his weight on top of Overeem, it was inevitable. WOW!

WINNER: Ben Rothwell by KO at 2:19 in the first round.

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (***) This sport is so crazy. Between the crazy finishes here and the crazy stuff on the Bellator show, nights why this are why I can't quit you, MMA.

FIGHT FOUR: JACARE SOUZA VS. GEGARD MOUSASI (MIDDLEWEIGHT)

- oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god

- What a good night of fights. I expect them to cancel UFC 178 shortly, just to screw with me.

- Herb Dean is the referee.

- Jacare by upkick.

ROUND ONE: Mousasi keeping his left hand down by his waist flicks out a jab. Jacare shoots from a mile out and almost, amost I say, makes physical contact with Mousasi. Jacare gets in a few seconds later and has Mousasi against the cage. Mousasi stuffs an inside trip attempt. Total stalemate, as both these guys are extremely strong. Jacare misses on another inside trip attempt, but he is getting Mousasi's knees to give a little, which weakens the base of defene for Mousasi. Mousasi lands a couple nice short elbows to the head of Jacare, but that allowed Jacare to get him down with 2:30 left in the round. Jacare on top, in half-guard, near the fence, parallel to it. Jacare landing short knees. They're near Jacare's corner, as the camera is picking up a TON of Portuguese. Triangle attempt from Mousasi! Jacare stands out of it AND EATS AN UPKICK! Do he sits back down to Half-guard. Sorry. I just loved the upkick foour minutes in. 45 seconds left. Nice back fist by Mousasi, Jacare throws a couple in retaliation. Jacare is looking for a kimura, but Won't have time to finish it. Maybe if he had another full minute. 10-9 Jacare I need another cold shower.

ROUND TWO: Gegard lands a jab, then a quick right. Jacare with a solid left hook. Jacare starts swinging and hits a kick to the face. Mousasi grabs a body lock and puts Jacare on the fence. Nice uppercut from Mousasi. Jacare drops down for a double leg and succeeds in getting Mousasi down. Same position as last round, half-guard near and parallel to the fence. Mousasi is throwin a ton of short punches from his back. Jacare isn't worried about striking, he's looking for the far arm. If he gets his leg free he'll have side control. Mousasi tries to hip escape, but not with Jacare on top of you. Herb Dean hates fun and orders them to work. I HATE YOU HERB DEAN! Jacare stands and almost eats an upkick. He dives back in to half-guard. Mousasi's pressed into the cage. 1:40 remains in the second. Jacare is standing over Mousasi, and you can SO tell how aware he is of the upkicks. His body was bent almost 90 degrees away from Mousasi's leg. Jacare sliced through the guard and has side control. He desperately wants the kimura. This round is a carbon copy of the first. He's in north south and just needs to pull the arm out. Thirty seconds remain. Jacare has pinned the other arm with his knee. Fifteen seconds. Crucifix. The horn sounds. 20-18 Jacare Dear Lord, I need a drink. and another cold shower.

ROUND THREE: Mousasi throws a right to the body. follows up with a snapping jab to Jacare's head. Big right from Mousasi. He's found his range. Jacare misses wild yet tight hooks, Mousasi lands jabs at will. Jab from Mousasi. Jacare with a couple wild hooks. Eats a jab. Big left from Mousais. Mousasi backs into the cage and immediately gets picked up and planted on his butt. Near the cage, just like the first two rounds. Jacare looks for an arm, but takes Mousasi's back instead. Mousasi carries Jacare's weight as he gets back to his feet, and Jacare disengages with 2:30 left. Mousasi is gassed, and has a mouse underneath his right eye. Jacare shoots the double into the cage, and eats a 12-6 elbow to the back of the head. Rather than calling a foul, Herb Dean tells Jacare to work. Le sigh. Mousasi grabs the fence, but gets taken down anyhow. Jacare postures up to his feet and drops a couple of bombs with his right fist. Jacare dives into full guard. Mousasi starts to sit up and gives up his neck. Mousasi just sat up into a guillotine and this fight is over. Jacare wins by submission!

WINNER: Jacare Souza by submission (guillotine) at 4:30 in the third round.

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (***) And that's all for Jacare's brilliance on the mat. I never thought this would be a squash, but I never thought Mousasi would win, either. I know, it's a thin line I walk. Jacare can beat Chris Weidman. Vitor Belfort can't.
