UFC FIGHT NIGHT 49
AUGUST 23, 2014
LIVE FROM TULSA, OKLAHOMA

=====UFC Fight Pass Prelim Quick Result=====

-Wilson Reis def. Joby Sanchez via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Note: Reis nearly got knocked out in the second round, and it arguably should have been stopped in that stretch, but Reis managed to survive, and controlled the rest of the way with takedowns and back control. Sanchez showed off some good defense, and it wasn't a bad showing given the short notice nature of the fight.

=====Fox Sports 2 Prelims Quick Results=====

-Ben Saunders def. Chris Heatherly via submission (omoplata) at 2:18 of the first round

Note: Yes, you read that right, Saunders finished it with an omoplata, the first time a fight has been finished with that move ever in the UFC. It was beautiful. Fantastic return to the UFC for Saunders.

-Matt Hobar def. Aaron Phillips via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Note: Entertaining fight. Hobar did really well out-grappling Phillips and doing damage both on the feet and on the ground. Phillips stayed dangerous from his back with a lot of upkicks, but Hobar did a very good job keeping position despite the erratic defense from Phillips.

-Beneil Dariush def. Tony Martin via submission (arm triangle choke) at 3:38 of the second round

Note: Martin had a really good first round, mixing up a lot of strikes, but he wasted energy at times and completely gassed out into the second round. Dariush, to his credit, took advantage, and pulled off an excellent arm triangle choke in that second round.

-Neil Magny def. Alex Garcia via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

Note: Two judges giving Magny all three rounds just seems off, but it was't a very action-packed fight. Garcia looked to have blown out his knee in the first, but it seemed like he had an argument for two rounds himself. Questionable decision.

=====Fox Sports 1 Main Card=====

-Jon Anik and Brian Stann on commentary tonight, which is an excellent team for the UFC right now. Speaking of announcing, Jim Ross is in attendance in Tulsa tonight...

FIGHT ONE: CHAS SKELLY VS. TOM NIINIMAKI (FEATHERWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Skelly threw a few wild strikes and Niinimaki fired back. They briefly clinched but separated with strikes. Skelly worked back in and tried for a takedown on the cage. Skelly took Niinimaki's back standing and tried to get his hooks in. Niinimaki tried to shake him off, but couldn't sneak out as he got dragged to the ground. Niinimaki finally snuck out, then went for a guillotine choke of his own. That proved to be a mistake, as Skelly popped out and wound up on top. Skelly then went for a rear naked choke in a quick transition, locked in on tight and forced the tap. Very, very nice performance from Chas Skelly.

WINNER: Skelly via submission (rear naked choke) at 2:35 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**+) Really good work from Skelly. His transitions were nice, he stayed patient on his attack, and even after Niinimaki escaped his first back mount attempt, he quickly got back in to score that choke. That's the performance he needed after an underwhelming UFC debut earlier this year.

FIGHT TWO: JAMES VICK VS. VALMIR LAZARO (LIGHTWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: They traded some early leg kicks. Lazaro connected on a hard kick. Vick tried to work from distance with his range, but wasn't landing a ton. He connected on a couple of hard leg kicks to the lead leg. Lazaro fired back in similar fashion. Lazaro landed a hard right hand. Lazaro connected to the body. Vick connected on a nice jumping knee, but Lazaro took it. Lazaro threw out his hands wildly, but wasn't connecting. Vick connected on a few strikes of his own. Lots of sloppiness from both here, leaving themselves open for big strikes. They clinched and Lazaro got in a knee to the body. They traded hard punches. Vick landed a big straight right and Lazaro was wobbled, but he shot in and scored a takedown. Vick swept him, but couldn't keep mount. Instead, they stood and started swinging again. Zero defense in this fight. This is hands down, chins up, punches thrown. They traded strikes again. Lazaro got Vick down briefly, but Vick quickly moved back up. Vick landed a two punch combo but didn't cover up at all and ate a counter. He tried to grab a head lock but had to let it go. He ate some strikes with his hands down. Vick landed a couple more to the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Vick. These two are completely disregarding the striking of the other, and as such are getting clipped constantly. Someone's likely going out in this one.

ROUND TWO: More from both fighters throwing strikes without defending much of anything through the first minute, though at a slower rate. This is just getting uglier at this point. Lazaro got in a couple kicks. He was doing damage with the leg kicks. Lazaro landed a few more strikes. Lazaro swung wildly again, and Vick was cut by the left eye. Vick landed a hard right hand and Lazaro was hurt badly. Lazaro tried for a takedown but got stuffed. Vick landed another right hand that snapped Lazaro's head. Lazaro recovered and landed a few strikes at the cage. Lazaro landed several more strikes at the cage as Vick slowed down. Vick landed a body punch. Lazaro scored a takedown late in the round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Vick. Most damage done, didn't do enough offensively to make up for getting badly rocked. Either way, really ugly round.

ROUND THREE: Vick connected on another hard right hand early. He did it again and Lazaro tried to shoot in. Vick stuffed it. Lazaro landed a strike in the clinch. Vick got out and ate a strike. Lazaro put his hands on his waist. They fired again and Lazaro connected on a right hand that staggered Vick. Lazaro missed a strike and Vick landed the right hand again. After a few more ugly exchanges, Vick dropped Lazaro with a grazing head kick. Lazaro got up and tried to clinch. Vick accidentally kicked him in the groin and it gave Lazaro a breather. As they restarted, they traded more wild punches. Vick connected on the right hand again. Lazaro missed several strikes. Vick got in a knee to the jaw. Vick slipped up and Lazaro stood above him to end the round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Vick. Just did more damage. Lazaro missed most of his attacks.

WINNER: Vick via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

STAR RATING: (*+) There were parts in the first round that were fun, but this is the type of thing that drags down what it means to be a "UFC level" fight. Just so little in the way of technique and skill shown in the fight, instead devolving quickly into an ugly, sloppy brawl.

FIGHT THREE: MAX HOLLOWAY VS. CLAY COLLARD (149 LB. CATCHWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Holloway closed the distance early and got in a knee in the clinch. He threw a head kick that was partially blocked. Collard threw out some punches and kicks. Holloway landed a hard head kick with some strikes behind. Collard took the blows and moved forward. Holloway fired off another combination. Collard caught a kick and landed several strikes at the cage. They traded punches. Holloway landed another combination. Collard got in a knee before getting tripped. Holloway let him up. Collard threw a jumping kick that connected. He missed a spinning kick. Holloway landed a counter right. Collard missed a few strikes. He put his hands down and eyed Holloway down. Then he ate a spinning back kick to the body. They traded strikes again. Collard landed a leg kick. Holloway went for the spinning back kick to the body again. Holloway landed a nice right hand with a few knees and punches in the clinch. Holloway landed another combo with a head kick. He landed a spinning kick to the body and another combination. Holloway feinted a kick and landed a big combination. Collard is taking a ton of punishment but to his credit continues to move in. Holloway landed a spinning kick to the head, another kick to the head, and another combination. Collard fired back. Holloway got in a kick to the body before the horn. Hot opening round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Holloway. Give Collard credit, he's hanging in there and taking some big shots, but he's still firing back. Still, clearly Holloway's round.

ROUND TWO: Holloway came out picking his spots again. He mixed in some kicks along with his combinations, and he was countering nicely in the opening minute. Holloway got in a nice body kick. He clinched briefly and got in a good knee to the body. Holloway landed a nice two punch combo that popped Collard's head back. Collard tried to fire back but didn't land much. Holloway landed a hard right hand, followed up with a flying knee, then another straight right, but Collard stayed standing and tried to come back with strikes. Collard's chin is ridiculous right now. He shot in for a takedown but got stuffed at the cage. Holloway landed an elbow and broke free, and Collard looked exhausted as they separated. Holloway landed a kick to the body. Another nice combo. Collard got in close but Holloway took his back in a nice transition. He lost the position and they stood up again. Collard got backed to the cage and Holloway lit him up with a combination. Collard shot in and Holloway tried to transition to the back. He turned it to a triangle attempt as he turned to his back. Collard avoided that and tried to land a strike from the top. Holloway went for another triangle and landed a couple of elbows before the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-8 Holloway. Collard's got nothing offensively in him right now, but he's still absorbing whatever's thrown at him. Completely one-sided round, though.

ROUND THREE: Holloway landed a short combo and avoided a rush from Collard. Collard tried to chase him down, but got hit by counter-strikes as Holloway circled around. Collard landed a kick and shot in. Holloway stuffed it at the cage. Collard was trying for it still and ate several elbows to the head. Holloway circled out. Collard moved straight back at him with a few strikes. Holloway landed a combo. Holloway landed a knee to the shoulder after stuffing a shot and got in some strikes from the top. Collard landed some strikes from his back. Holloway transitioned for an arm triangle, then Collard gave up his back. Holloway flattened him out and landed some strikes. Collard turned back and Holloway landed strikes in the mount. He kept dominant position with several strikes both in the mount and back mount. He landed some huge strikes from the mount. Collard gave up his back again. Holloway flattened him out again and continued firing away. Collard couldn't do much of anything and the fight was finally stopped. Extended one-sided beating in this fight, but that was Collard being extremely tough to put away.

WINNER: Holloway via TKO at 3:47 of the third round

STAR RATING: (**+) Excellent display of Holloway's varied game against a short notice opponent he was supposed to beat. It was a showcase as expected, and only extended because of Collard's ability to absorb a ridiculous amount of punishment.

-Holloway called out a Dennis Bermudez rematch or a fight with Dennis Siver next.

FIGHT FOUR: FRANCIS CARMONT VS. THALES LEITES (MIDDLEWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Leites opened with a leg kick. Carmont landed a right hand after pawing out a jab. Leites backed him up with a couple of strikes and clinched. He tried to score a takedown, but Carmont did a solid job holding it off and they separated. Leites surged in and connected on a right hand. They traded leg kicks. Carmont landed a hard kick to the leg that tripped Leites up, but he got right back to his feet. Leites threw a couple of strikes against the cage. Leites landed a hard leg kick. Nice head movement from Leites as he avoided a couple of strikes. Carmont nearly timed a takedown attempt well, but Leites did an excellent job getting loose. They separated. Leites again got tripped up on the leg kick, but he didn't go down that time. Leites missed a strike and may have been poked in the eye, but he continued. Leites initiated another clinch and they jockeyed for position on the cage. They separated again. Carmont again went to the leg kick. They both swung wildly but missed before the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Leites. Could be 10-9 Carmont. Close round without a ton of offense, but I felt Leites connected on more effective strikes that round.

ROUND TWO: Leites came out the aggressor, and he scored a few early strikes. He connected on a huge combination against the cage and Carmont went down off a two punch combo. Two more strikes on the ground and it's all over. Wow. That's a huge win for Thales Leites.

WINNER: Leites via KO at :20 of the second round

STAR RATING: (**+) All for that finish. Leites has improved his striking game immensely since returning to the UFC, and he's on a great run right now. Great win for him.

FIGHT FIVE: MIKE PYLE VS. JORDAN MEIN (WELTERWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Mein took the center early and tried to walk Pyle down. He avoided an early shot. Pyle again tried to grab a foot but Mein stepped out. They traded leg kicks. Mein dropped Pyle with a huge left hand in a flurry. Dan Miragliotta made contact with Mein, but then let him unload a bunch of strikes anyway before stopping it.

WINNER: Mein via TKO 1:12 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**+) Massively violent finish for Mein, and one of the biggest wins for him yet. Pyle's chin is going out on him as well, as even though he's picked up several stoppage wins himself, the last three losses he's suffered have been brutal.

-They replayed Ben Saunders' sick omoplata finish from the prelims, then sent back to the studio to waste a little more time before the main event.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT SIX: BENSON HENDERSON VS. RAFAEL DOS ANJOS (LIGHTWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Dos Anjos landed the first strike of the bout with a kick to the body. He landed a kick to the lead leg. Henderson returned a hard one to the leg of his own. He landed a solid push kick that sent dos Anjos off balance. Dos Anjos came back in with a few leg kicks and a good kick to the body. Dos Anjos landed another body kick. He rocked Henderson with a left hand. He backed Henderson up and landed a big combo. Dos Anjos landed a flying knee that rocked Henderson! He landed a left hook that sent Henderson down and out! Big John McCarthy stopped it quick and Henderson came to, protesting the stoppage a bit with a smile, then jumping around like he was OK. He clearly went out though. Wow. What a win for dos Anjos.

WINNER: Dos Anjos via KO at 2:31 of the first round

STAR RATING: (***+) Stunning work from dos Anjos, although the crowd continued to inexplicably boo the finish. That was a good stoppage. Dos Anjos just started picking Henderson apart there, hurt him bad with the flying knee, and then put him down with that left hand. Bendo went down and out, coming to after another strike on the ground. He can complain if he wants, but he went out.

-That brings an end to another long UFC double header day. Thanks for joining us here tonight, there will be plenty to break down on this event this week, and we'll turn our attention to next weekend's UFC 177 event on pay-per-view!
