UFC FIGHT NIGHT 48
AUGUST 23, 2014
LIVE FROM MACAU, CHINA

-Early morning fights from China today. We'll have quick results on the prelims here this morning, and a full round by round report for the main card beginning at 9AM ET!

=====UFC Fight Pass Prelims Quick Results=====

-Milana Dudieva def. Elizabeth Phillips via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)

Note: Dudieva made several missteps throughout the fight after delivering the bulk of the damage, leading to her on her back for lengthy amounts of time in the fight. The 30-27 score didn't make sense for her, but 29-28 either way would have been fine given the damage she did do.

-Royston Wee def. Yao Zhikui via split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28)

Note: Terrible decision and the crowd booed the hell out of it. Wee got beat up badly through the first half of the second round and then throughout the third, but some top control time in the first and second somehow gave him the fight. Some really bad scores this morning already.

-Colby Covington def. Wang Anying via submission (strikes) at 4:50 of the first round

Note: Covington dominated from the jump, stalking Anying, getting him to the ground, and doing a ton of damage. Anying managed to get to his feet at one point, but got brought back down and beat up some more, finally tapping out due to the strikes against the cage.

-Yuta Sasaki def. Roland Delorme via submission (rear naked choke) at 1:06 of the first round

Note: Damned impressive debut for Sasaki. He had a beautiful transition to take Delorme's back, locked on a sick RNC, and rolled through, leaving Delorme no choice but to tap. That was excellent.

-Alberto Mina def. Shinsho Anzai via TKO at 4:17 of the first round

Note: Unbelievably ugly fight with both just winging punches throughout. Just really bad MMA action, but the UFC encourages that type of unskilled, undisciplined wildness. Mina scored the knockdown late and we got one of the worst stoppages in some time, as the ref allowed him to throw 11 hammerfists before stepping in despite Anzai going down hard on the initial knockdown and not defending himself on the ground.

-Wang Sai def. Danny Mitchell via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Note: Competitive fight that had its moments. Nothing special, but solid compared to a couple of the fights on the card thus far.

=====UFC Fight Pass Main Card=====

-Mike Goldberg and Kenny Florian on commentary here this morning. It's been an OK card thus far with a few finishes and a couple of wonky decisions. Four fights left to go, starting with the delayed featherweight final of "The Ultimate Fighter: China" season 1.

FIGHT ONE: NING GUANGYOU VS. YANG JIANPING (TUF: CHINA FEATHERWEIGHT FINAL)

ROUND ONE: Guangyou threw an overhand left early and drove in for a clinch. It was Jianping reversing for his own takedown, but Guangyou got to his feet and pulled off a throw that put him on top. Jianping transitioned on the bottom and pulled Guangyou out of side control and into his guard, where he landed a couple of elbows from his back. Jianping tried to kick him off but couldn't. He escaped, and tried to pull off his own trip but didn't get it. He backed off. Jianping circled around the outside as Guangyou labored in. Neither was throwing or landing much of anything and the crowd got a little restless. Jianping landed a right hand, and nearly got Guangyou down with a trip. So little actually happening. Guangyou got a clinch and threw a few knees to the body before Jianping could separate. Back to a whole lot of nothing, and another round of boos from the crowd. Guangyou landed a flying knee but it wasn't flush, so it was back to more tentative striking without many strikes being thrown to the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Guangyou. Jianping just didn't do much of anything, not that Guangyou was much better; bad round.

ROUND TWO: The ref practically begs both fighters for some action in this round. No dice through the first minute. Guangyou scored a takedown. He didn't do anything on top, but as Jianping escaped, Guangyou grabbed a guillotine choke. Jianping managed to escape the attempt to get to his feet. Back to more tentative stalking, very little being thrown, even less landing. Such a bad fight. The ref called a groin shot even though Guangyou didn't react, and there was a communication issue which led to an awkward halt to the fight. The crowd got on their case again as the fight restarted to more of the same. Guangyou pressed in late with several strikes that didn't land.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Guangyou. This fight - if you can even call it that at this point - is terrible.

ROUND THREE: Early boos from the crowd as there was more movement without much being thrown. Guangyou landed a kick to the body. Jianping got in a leg kick. That was it in the first minute. More standing across from one another, and the crowd boos again. Jianping threw some inside leg kicks finally. Guangyou tried to move in, but missed a couple of strikes. More complete inaction. There's nothing happening in this fight, it's just absolutely terrible.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-10. It really doesn't matter, neither threw much of anything, neither landed much of anything. Awful fight.

WINNER: Guangyou via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

STAR RATING: (*-) Round of boos from the crowd. That's the worst fight the UFC has promoted in 2014.

FIGHT TWO: ZHANG LIPENG VS. BRENDAN O'REILLY (LIGHTWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: O'Reilly circled on the outside to kick things off. Lipeng landed a hard leg kick 30 seconds in, but there was some tentative feeling out early that the crowd didn't like after seeing three rounds of it last fight. O'Reilly missed a couple of strikes, then shot in. Lipeng stuffed the takedown attempt at the cage. O'Reilly stayed on him against the cage and landed a couple of knees. He tried to drag Lipeng down, but got countered and wound up on his back with Lipeng in his half guard. O'Reilly tried to reverse from the bottom, but Lipeng held his position. O'Reilly then did pull off the reverse after some inaction from Lipeng. Lipeng tried to kick O'Reilly off, but O'Reilly moved back into his guard, though he missed the strike he tried to throw. O'Reilly didn't do a lot on top, until both threw a few strikes to finish the round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Lipeng. Close, not really all that active round, so this could go either way. Could be a 10-10, as neither did much offensively on top.

ROUND TWO: More tentative action to start the second frame. This card has just come to a screeching halt with these last two fights. O'Reilly got in a leg kick and then shot in, but Lipeng defended against the cage. Things stalled in the clinch as they tried to get position on one another. Lipeng tried for a trip. O'Reilly attempted a throw, but gave up his back standing in the process. Lipeng landed a short strike and O'Reilly turned into him. Lipeng then scored a takedown. O'Reilly gave up his back in a brief scramble. Lipeng locked on a body triangle and went for a rear naked choke. He lost it. O'Reilly tried to roll out, but Lipeng held his spot. O'Reilly threw a few strikes behind him until the round ended.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Lipeng. Still not much going on, but getting that takedown and back mount with a body triangle gives it to Lipeng.

ROUND THREE: So much inaction once again in the opening minute. O'Reilly grazed Lipeng with a right hand and shot in. Lipeng stuffed it. A short strike opened up O'Reilly's lip badly. Lipeng then got his back standing and dragged him down. Lipeng started landing several strikes while holding onto the body triangle. O'Reilly's mouth was a mess. Lipeng continued connecting on hard strikes as O'Reilly kept trying to defend. Lipeng was connecting and doing damage, as O'Reilly's face was starting to get beat up badly. Lipeng continued to do damage until the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Lipeng. Well, he finally started doing some damage in that final couple minutes, but this was another mostly bad fight.

WINNER: Lipeng via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

STAR RATING: (*) Not as bad as the last fight, but not all that much better, either.

FIGHT FOUR: DONG HYUN KIM VS. TYRON WOODLEY (WELTERWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Kim closed the distance immediately and landed a left hand. Woodley responded with a right and clinched. Kim landed some open palm strikes. Woodley got in a few knees in the clinch. Kim got in a knee of his own. Woodley separated. Kim rushed in and got clipped as he threw a spinning strike. Woodley pounced on the ground and landed several strikes. Kim covered up after taking several big strikes and the ref stepped in. Replay shows Woodley caught Kim behind the ear as Kim was in mid-spin on that back fist attempt. Kim's aggressiveness finally caught up to him here.

WINNER: Woodley via TKO at 1:01 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**) Didn't even get started here. Kim was sloppier than in his last couple of fights, and Woodley timed the counter to that spinning strike perfectly. It's a downer loss for Kim, but a big bounce back win for Woodley.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT FOUR: MICHAEL BISPING VS. CUNG LE (MIDDLEWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Bisping pawed out a jab. Le threw a kick to the body. Le landed a hard leg kick but missed the punch for the combination. Le landed a short right. Le landed another body kick. Bisping got in a leg kick. Le landed a hard body kick as he moved in. Le with a nice straight punch to the body. He threw a side kick to the body but missed a spinning back first. Nice try though. Bisping threw a spinning kick to the body of his own. Bisping landed a left hand. Le tried to stalk as Bisping circled on the outside. Le landed a leg kick. He caught Bisping high on the body with a kick as Bisping ducked in. Bisping avoided a couple of strikes. Le connected with another kick to the body after some minor exchanges. Bisping landed a few strikes in combination. Bisping started opening up a bit, landing strikes and moving out of the way. Le caught Bisping in the groin with a kick and things were briefly delayed. Bisping landed a right hand as Le threw a side kick. Bisping rushed in with a combination. He landed the right hand. Bisping with a nice left hand, and a few more strikes.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Bisping. Le was well on his way to winning the round, but I think Bisping stole it back with the final minute and a half. Le moving slowly already, and Bisping picked up his output.

ROUND TWO: They traded some strikes early. Le said he got poked in the eye but the ref didn't stop things at all. Le was bleeding and the eye was bothering him badly. Bisping tried to take advantage and he started unloading strikes. Le covered up. Bisping opened him up further and may have broken his nose. Bisping got in a spinning back kick to the face. Le's face was a blody mess. Bisping continued picking his spots as Le circled around the cage. Le went high with a kick. Bisping landed an uppercut. The ref called a halt to look at the cuts. Odd timing for a stoppage in action there given the momentum of the fight. On replay, no eye poke, it was a straight punch that busted up Le's eye. As they restarted, Bisping landed a left. Le threw a spinning kick that missed. Bisping threw one of his own. Le staggered Bisping with a right and Bisping syarted backing up a bit. Le landed a body kick and Bisping connected on a counter-combo. Le fired back to the body again. They traded punches. Le threw a side kick and it hit Bisping in the groin, bringing another halt to the action. They restarted with a minute and a half left. They exchanged strikes. Le landed a hard body kick. Bisping landed a jab. Things slowed down a bit for both. Bisping connected on a combination. Bisping missed a few strikes late. They traded punches before the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Bisping. Le was getting beat up for a large part of that round, but Bisping slowed down late himself.

ROUND THREE: They traded kicks after some early missed strikes. Bisping landed a good jab and Le missed his counter. Bisping landed a couple of leg kicks. Le landed a right hook. Bisping quickly backed off. Le got in a spinning back kick to the body. Bisping connected to the body. Bisping landed a kick. Bisping connected with an inside leg kick. Le threw the side kick to the body. Bisping landed a straight right. Le again with the side kick to the body. Bisping got in a couple of jabs and landed a hard body kick. Le fired a couple of shots to the body. Bisping landed a few strikes in combination. Bisping put together another combination with punches and kikcs. Le pressed in with a left. He landed a hard counter left. Bisping threw a combination. Bisping put together more strikes. Le landed a hard body kick. Bisping connected on a nice uppercut. Bisping landed a nice combination to the body against the cage. Le fired off a left hook. Bisping landed a few more strikes before the horn, then put his hands on his knees.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Bisping. He's out-striking Le, but the power is still there for Le when he does connect.

ROUND FOUR: Bisping kept the pressure on early. He landed a nice combination with a body kick ending it. He landed some hard body shots and backed Le up. Bisping continued throwing strikes and dropped Le with an uppercut. Le went down hard and covered up, Bisping threw a few strikes and the ref stepped in. That went about how I thought it would.

WINNER: Bisping via TKO at :57 of the fourth round

STAR RATING: (***-) Entertaining fight, and easily Bisping's best performance in quite some time. The fight went about how I expected it to go, with Bisping wearing Le down as the fight went on, and ramping up the attack as Le got more and more tired. Not only did he do that, he ramped up the output and beat the crap out of Le to get that finish.

-Bisping called out Luke Rockhold again in his post-fight interview.

-Thanks for joining us this morning! We'll have more reaction to this fight in particular and we'll move ahead to tonight's UFC Fight Night 49 event on FS1!
