The first round featured good back and forth action with Tate getting the better of the standup other than a big knee landed by Zingano. Zingano did, however, take the upper hand in the grappling department until the last minute or so when Tate was able to land some effective ground and pound.
Tate picked up where she left off in the second round, landing strikes on the ground until rolling for an omoplata. Zingano was able to escape that position but ended up with Tate on her back. From there Tate transitioned to mount and later to a heel hook attempt. That would be the turning point of the round, as Zingano escaped and landed some brutal strikes from the top and caused Tate to cover up for the last minute.
Zingano carried her late-round momentum into the third round and took Tate down within the first 20 seconds, continuing to ground and pound. Tate took a good amount of punishment on the ground and worked her way back to the feet, which proved to be her undoing. Zingano nailed her with a series of brutal knees and a standing elbow, forcing Kim Winslow to step in and call a stop to the action.
All in all a fantastic fight that showcased at least a good storyline as to why Zingano could be a good foil for Rhonda Rousey. With her ability to survive on the ground and land extremely hard strikes, the pieces are in place to build intrigue for a fight with the Women's Bantamweight Champ.
