Coming this fall, all UFC main events, whether on pay-per-view, Spike, Versus or otherwise, will be five round fights.

The news comes from UFC President Dana White, who revealed after Thursday's pre-UFC 131 press conference that the organization would be making all of their non-title main events five rounds.

The change will not come for any of the currently scheduled events, such as August's UFC 133 fight between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis or UFC on Versus 5's Dan Hardy vs. Chris Lytle bout, as contracts are already in place for those fights.

"[Phil Davis vs. Rashad Evans] should be [five rounds]," White said (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com). "But what I don't want to do to guys is fights that we've already made and they've signed the bout agreement, you're mentally training for a three-round fight. To come back and say, 'Oh, it's five rounds now,' you can't do that to a guy.

"So all the [main event] fights that will be made from this day forward will be five rounds."

Penick's Analysis: White has been talking about this for awhile now, but the fact that they'll finally be implementing it going forward is awesome news. It increases the likelihood of finishes in main event fights, and separates them from the rest of the card and gives them more meaning for being in the marquee fight for a card. The fact that it will be for all events going forward again will make the main events feel more special than just another fight even if a title isn't on the line. This is a great move on the part of the UFC.
