The UFC has officially confirmed the removal of Thiago Alves from Saturday's UFC 111 card, due to a failed CAT scan during a pre-fight physical.
With his removal his bout with Jon Fitch is off, and no replacement will be found for Fitch. The loss of that bout left a spot open on the night's pay-per-view card, and the preliminary card bout between lightweights Kurt Pellegrino and Fabricio Camoes has been moved up to that slot.
UFC 111 comes live on Spike TV and pay-per-view Saturday night from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.. The card is headlined by the UFC Welterweight Championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Dan Hardy.
Penick's Analysis: It was either going to be this fight or the Rousimar Palhares vs. Thomasz Drwal fight getting bumped up, so I'm fine with seeing this lightweight clash. Clearly neither fight is anywhere near the caliber that the Fitch vs. Alves fight would have been, but they've got a slot to fill and this Pellegrino vs. Camoes fight should be an enjoyable lightweight clash. Right now it's still just highly unfortunate for the card that they lost his fight, but hopefully it will mean something potentially more serious for Alves was caught before it went too far.
