UFC welterweight Martin Kampmann has suffered an injury in training and has been forced out of a scheduled UFC 111 bout with Ben Saunders, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com. In his place steps Jake Ellenberger, coming off a UFC 108 victory over Mike Pyle.
Kampmann himself had gotten back on the winning path at UFC 108 last month, defeating Jacob Volkmann on the card. It was a good win after his TKO loss to Paul Daley last September.
Ellenberger is now 1-1 in the UFC, having lost his UFC debut to Carlos Condit in September. He's already amassed 27 fights even though he's only 24 years old, winning 22 of them.
Saunders gets back into action for the first time since November, where he defeated Marcus Davis in brutal fashion at UFC 106. The former Ultimate Fighter contestant is now 4-1 in the UFC.
UFC 111 is set to air live on pay-per-view on March 27th from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, headlined by a UFC Title double-shot with the return of Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre against Dan Hardy and an Interim Heavyweight Title bout between Frank Mir and Shane Carwin.
Penick's Analysis: Ellenberger's a good replacement in this one. He hits hard and should be able to hold his own against Saunders in what could be an all out brawl. The injury bug sucks for Kampmann, and that fight with Saunders was looking very exciting, but it's what happens in the fight game. Let's just hope after what went down with that UFC 108 card that this one doesn't start to crumble with injuries, as it's certainly one of the best ones on the docket here in the near future.
