Former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra has signed on for a bout against Frank Trigg at UFC 109 on February 6th.
Serra announced the bout signing on his Facebook page. Wrote Serra, "Signed to fight Frank Trigg on Feb. 6 in Vegas (UFC). Should be an exciting fight!!! I love the UFC... they keep hooking me up with the most arrogant guys to punch in the face!!!"
The bout will be Serra's first since losing to Matt Hughes in their long awaited clash this past May, and Trigg's second bout since returning to the UFC. Trigg was defeated by Josh Koscheck at UFC 102 in August.
UFC 109 is set to air live on pay-per-view on February 6th, Super Bowl weekend, and is tentatively scheduled to feature a Middleweight Title bout between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort.
Penick's Analysis: This is a good match-up for both fighters. Serra looked good against Hughes, and arguably could've won a decision in that bout. Trigg may have one shot left in him after the loss to Koscheck, and if he can somehow manage a victory over a fighter who was the Champion just last year it will allow him to continue in the UFC and erase the image somewhat of the Koscheck loss. For Serra, a victory would be his first in three fights, and it would come against a recognizable name so he can try to climb back up the ladder. The Super Bowl show is definitely shaping up well; but with what we've seen over the last few months, until the event actually takes place it seems none of these bouts are safe.
