Former UFC Champ Anthony Pettis fights Eddie Alvarez this January, and a win could have him right back into a title fight. However, whether he earns the shot or not, it may not be his top priority.
According to a report from UFC Tonight on Fox Sports 1, Pettis wants to fight Rafael dos Anjos after Alvarez, regardless of whether or not dos Anjos retains the title in December.
Pettis lost the title to dos Anjos in March, and he was controlled thoroughly throughout the five round bout. Pettis wants to avenge that loss, and given he's already defeated dos Anjos' next opponent Donald Cerrone, getting back the win is more important to him than the title.
First up is Alvarez, and that fight goes down on Jan. 17 in Boston on Fox Sports 1.
Penick's Analysis: It makes sense. Should Cerrone defeat dos Anjos, a Pettis-Cerrone rematch could be easily sold; but if Pettis wants to prove that the March fight was an aberration, he needs to beat dos Anjos. There are others in the mix in this division, but a Pettis-dos Anjos rematch is probably an inevitability, even if it doesn't happen after the Alvarez fight.
