The office of Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has given a statement regarding the conduct of members of the Nevada Athletic Commission during Nick Diaz's hearing earlier this month, and those hoping for intervention on that end are sure to be disappointed.
The statement below was released via Wednesday's UFC Tonight program on Fox Sports 1 from Mari N. St. Martin, the Communications Director for the governor, and makes it clear that he's not going to police individual decisions.
"The Governor puts great thought into his appointments and has an expectation that his appointees will represent the state with integrity and serve as fair and impartial members of their respective board or commission," the statement read. "The Nevada State Athletic Commission has sole jurisdiction over licensing of its contestants. The Governor's Office monitors all board and commissions to ensure they are in compliance with state law but does not second guess individual rulings within the boundaries of statutory authority."
Penick's Analysis: Obviously micro-managing every single decision an office makes is not conducive to a smooth operation. However, when there's no fear of repercussions and no one is held responsible for their actions, it makes it easy for them to do their jobs poorly. That's what happened here with Diaz, and it's unfortunate, though unsurprising, that nothing further will happen from the Governor's office here. That doesn't mean Diaz has no hope from here, but it's one avenue for a resolution that has been closed off.
