"I'm hoping Jose will show up. I'm going to retire him, end his career, and then I've done what I've said I'll do. I said I'm going to kill the featherweight division, there's nobody left... If Frankie [Edgar] was to put on a phenomenal performance and stop Chad, or maybe something like that, then I can say, alright, let's answer the Frankie question, let's shut him down real quick. But in my mind, I'm thinking, I'm going to unify the belts, I'm going to destroy the division, and then I'm going to take the lightweight division as well. That's where I'm headed right now."
-During a media event in Los Angeles this week, Conor McGregor says he's moving up to lightweight if/when he takes out Jose Aldo at UFC 194, unless Frankie Edgar puts on a great performance against Chad Mendes to warrant that title fight (via MMAFighting.com).
Penick's Analysis: If McGregor and Edgar both win, that's the fight that needs to happen next, and I don’t know that the UFC will be keen on having a division's champion abandon the weight class. Then again, if he beats Aldo, and draws the number they'll be expected to draw, he may earn the leeway to fight whomever he wants at whatever weight class he wants to make the biggest fight. That's dependent on him stopping Aldo, of course, because a close fight breeds a rematch in the event he eels out a decision. Either way, there's a lot still yet to play out before McGregor exits the featherweight field.
