Erick Silva had a quite poor performance against late replacement opponent Neil Magny at UFC Fight Night 74, and now he's saying he came into the fight less than 100%.
In a post to Instagram expressing his embarrassment over the performance, Silva said he made a mistake in fighting through an injury that had affected him in camp, but he said regardless of that issue that he simply had an awful performance and the loss was a result of that.
"Honestly, I didn't like my performance," Silva wrote (translated via BloodyElbow.com). "I was defeated. I'm embarrassed with my performance, my body. I know I'm way more than this Erick that fought last night. My main mistake was having insisted on fighting, and put not only my head at stake but also my coaches' and doctors' who did the best they could to at least get me to the fight. It wasn't a good month for me, but no one has to know, it's no one's problem. I had a ridiculous performance and deserved to lose. I paid the price for it.
"The only thing left for me is to guarantee that the next time I step inside that Octagon again I will be 100 percent physically, no injuries, and with a full training camp. Otherwise, I'll do like everyone does, and cancel the fight."
Penick's Analysis: Silva looked awful on Sunday, allowing Magny on two weeks notice to dictate everything about that fight. Injury or no, it followed in the inconsistencies he's shown throughout his UFC run, and it was a disappointing setback. Far too many fighters step into the cage and try to fight despite things holding them back, and if they're not close to 100% we see performances like he put forth on Sunday. It's a learning experience, but at this point there's little to suggest it's the last time we'll see him have a performance in that vein from him.
