Nate Diaz is returning at UFC on Fox 17 in Orlando this December, not against Anthony Pettis or Khabib Nurmagomedov, but against Michael Johnson.
The UFC announced the bout on Monday, which is likely to take place on the network televised main card.
Diaz has lost three of his last four fights, most recently dropping a decision to now-UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos last December. The longtime veteran remains a popular competitor despite those defeats, and though he's been trying to call out fighters above Johnson in the pecking order, the UFC's gone a different route.
As for Johnson, the 29-year-old should be on a five fight winning streak, but a robbery decision against Beneil Dariush snapped a four-fight winning streak earlier this month. He'll now try to bounce back in one of his more high profile matchups to date in the UFC.
UFC on Fox 17 takes place from the Amway Center in Orlando on Dec. 19, headlined by the UFC Lightweight Championship bout between dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone.
