A highly anticipated featherweight matchup between Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira ended in highly unfortunate fashion on Sunday night, as the UFC Fight Night 74 main event ended due to injury just a minute and a half into the fight.
Holloway picks up the official win by TKO, as something happened to Oliveira after he attempted to pull guard off a rush from the young Hawaiian. It wasn't immediately clear what the injury was, as Oliveira stood up, grabbed towards his left collarbone/shoulder area, then dropped back down after taking a few punches.
A stretcher was needed to take him out of the cage, and according to the Combate television coverage of the bout, it may have been something Oliveira was already dealing with prior to the event.
Combate's color commentator @alonsopvt just said on air that he heard that do Bronx went into the fight with some type of neck injury (cont)
Following the bout, Holloway called for a No. 1 contender fight with Frankie Edgar, and asked the UFC to bring that fight to Hawaii.
Penick's Analysis: If Oliveira had a neck injury coming into the fight that went essentially unaddressed, that's a significant failure on the part of his coaches and the regulatory body in Saskatchewan to protect him. Hopefully it's not something extremely serious, but it's a scary situation with how little information we've got at the moment.
