UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum won't be back in the cage until the end of the year at the earliest, but he's saying this week he wants to get in on the action with the Jose Aldo-Conor McGregor fight.
Speaking to media in Brazil, Werdum said he'd be more than happy to take a co-main event slot under that fight, but if that doesn't happen he's expecting to be out until the Super Bowl weekend show in February.
"I want to fight on the Aldo vs. McGregor card," Werdum said (via Guilherme Cruz at MMAFighting.com). "Fans want to watch this fight, so I'm willing to fight there... For sure, I would be down to fight in the co-main event. There's a lot of expectation for this fight between Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo, it will get a lot of attention. Heavyweights are important, of course, but a fight like this will draw more attention than a rematch with Cain Velasquez, for an example."
"I will probably fight in December of February, at the Super Bowl weekend card [if I'm not on the Aldo-McGregor card]. I don't know when it's going to happen, but I would really like to fight on this card."
Penick's Analysis: I'm sure there are a lot of guys with potential pay-per-view points wanting to take part in the Aldo-McGregor card. The UFC is likely to have another title fight (or even two) on the Aldo-McGregor card depending on when it happens, but it would be unprecedented for a Heavyweight Title fight to be in a co-main event. Not that it would be an unacceptable place for that one, but the UFC is just unlikely to make that move.
