"Early on, when I heard that he was injured, we threw our hat in the mix, saying we'd be willing to step in. They decided to go with Chad Mendes for that role. I think the explanation was that he was the No. 1 contender and I was No. 2 at the time... It's kind of finicky with the rankings. I think after he got the nod the new rankings came out and I was No. 1 and neither of us fought. So it's kind of a tough spot. I think we're going to see what happens on the 11. I'm not going to sit around and wait for the winner to fight Aldo. It's an interim title, but it's really a No. 1 contender fight. The winner gets to fight Aldo when he's healthy. With Aldo, you just never know when he's going to be healthy. Maybe I can get a fight with one of them – the winner – before that."
-Frankie Edgar talks to Inside MMA about getting passed over for the title fight at UFC 189 (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com).
Penick's Analysis: Edgar's an unfortunate victim to the entire situation with UFC 189 as it stands. Had Aldo-McGregor gone as planned, Edgar would have been more likely in line for the winner (which still makes the Mendes pick for this weekend a strange one). Had there been some delay there, Edgar and Mendes probably would have wound up fighting. Instead, Edgar's now going to need to stay busy against someone considerably further down the ladder, and it's just unfortunate because he's more than earned his second shot at Aldo.
