Thiago Alves has a big fight ahead of him at UFC Fight Night 67 on Saturday night, as a win over Carlos Condit would be the biggest he's had in several years. It could also potentially drive him into the title picture for the first time since 2009.
If that were to come to pass, Alves could be put in a position to eventually fight teammate and current UFC Champ Robbie Lawler. Alves addressed that possibility this week in an interview with FoxSports.com, but says they haven't yet discussed it, and won't until the time comes.
"We haven't talked about that yet because it hasn't happened," Alves said. "We'll cross that bridge but it's not time just yet. I'm 100-percent focused on Condit and once that's said and done, we'll see what's next.
"I have a big fight coming up, he has a big fight coming up so first things first and then we'll deal with that issue once it gets to that point."
Penick's Analysis: It's unlikely to be a conversation they'll need to have, because it would be a surprise to see Alves beat Condit on Saturday night. Still, if he wins that fight, and maybe another two after that, the UFC could potentially see him as a viable contender. That's a lot of "ifs," and it's unlikely we'll see it come to the point where they need to consider facing one another.
