UFC Lightweight Champ Rafael dos Anjos has not yet been cleared to return to training following surgery this spring, and he may not be cleared until September.
Because of that, he's targeting a December return to action, according to a report from UFC Tonight on Fox Sports 1 Wednesday night.
Dos Anjos captured the title in March at UFC 185, dominating Anthony Pettis en route to a unanimous decision victory. It's expected that Donald Cerrone will welcome him back to the cage.
Penick's Analysis: Given Cerrone had some significant injuries coming into UFC 187 last weekend, I hope he takes time off and heals up. It's not necessarily in his nature to stay on the sidelines for six to seven months, but in this instance it's the smart move. If he can get healthy and spend a few months then preparing for a rematch with dos Anjos, we might get the best version of both fighters competing for the title, and that's in everyone's best interest.
DON'T GO YET... WE SUGGEST THESE MMATORCH ARTICLES, TOO!
