Five and a half months after a loss to Jon Jones for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, Daniel Cormier had that belt wrapped around his waist on Saturday night at UFC 187.
Cormier defeated Anthony "Rumble" Johnson by submission in the third round to capture the vacated title, surviving an early onslaught before wearing Johnson down.
The story of the fight was Johnson gassing quickly. He dropped Cormier with an early overhand right, and did some other damage in the first round, but he allowed himself to get tied up and grappled. His body couldn't handle that, and the finish became an inevitability from there.
Cormier did some serious damage at the end of the second round, and Johnson gave up his back almost willingly in the third. Cormier locked in the rear naked choke, and that was that.
After the bout, Cormier had only one thing to say, and it was directed at only one person: Jon Jones.
"I have a message for one man: Jon Jones, get your shit together, I'm waiting for you!"
