While the push for marriage equality has been increasingly gaining steam in the U.S., there are efforts in other countries as well. Thus it came to pass that Conor McGregor took up the effort this week to encourage his fellow Irish to vote yes on a referendum coming on Friday.

McGregor addressed the Tweet further on Thursday in Las Vegas, giving his thoughts on the marriage equality issue during a UFC 189 media day.

"We all deserve equal rights," McGregor said (via MMAFighting.com). "We're all human here at the end of the day - regardless of color, gender, sexuality. Any of that. It's all meaningless. We all deserve the same rights. It just feels right to me.

"I can put something out and it can reach a lot of people, so I decided that it was the right thing to do that. My whole team [has] done it with me. We are proud to support that... I just hope it does [pass]. The support for the yes vote has been phenomenal. We will see. [The law] is stone age. It's a new age. It's time to get with it."

Penick's Analysis: McGregor captures why it makes little sense to oppose this push for equal rights. It's great to see someone in McGregor's position champion that cause when it's not necessarily something that would have been expected. This is a well reasoned comment on the subject, and that final line is perfect. Discriminatory laws that deny these rights are certainly not in line with the age we live in, and those continuing the push against righting those wrongs is delaying the inevitable.
