"Yes I am [the No. 1 contender], yeah. I feel that I am and I feel that I deserve it... My manager's talked a little bit, nothing much more than that. So we'll see what happens. I just beat the fifth-ranked guy decisively. I feel like I deserve it. I showed that I belong. I showed that, especially in that fight before even though I lost against the former champ [Junior] dos Santos. I've been through a five-round fight twice. So I want a shot at the title."
Penick's Analysis: There is absolutely an argument in his favor, but the fact that there's an "L" on his record from December doesn't help his case. Of course, that was an extremely close fight against Junior dos Santos, one which I and many others scored in favor of Miocic, but it still sits as a loss. However, with dos Santos expected to be out until the fall, I don't know who else is more deserving than Miocic at the moment of facing the Cain Velasquez-Fabricio Werdum winner. It depends on when that winner can fight again, as well, because if it's going to be a long time in between Heavyweight Title fights (something that's become commonplace), then Miocic will need to fight again anyway. Still, he's got an argument for it, and if the timing works in his favor he just might get that shot.
